Right click or Ctrl/Cmd + right click and choose the layer from the context menu.

Is there a rhyme or reason behind clicking on a thing yet sometimes having the thing next to it get clicked instead? Seems like if I click on a thing that thing should get clicked, not a different thing. The obviousness of this causes me to wonder if Iโ€™m just not seeing the white elephant in the room. Am I missing something here?

In this case the text that is being selected is not โ€œnextโ€ to where you are clicking, but directly above (even though there are no visible characters there, the text bounding box is there). You can clearly see that when you click it, the selection area is not somewhere to the side of the cursor (not โ€œnextโ€ to it), but it surrounds the cursor.
