Missing variables for a layer (sometimes)

Hi! I created a set of variables for my breakpoints but occasionally I don’t see an icon to apply mode to the frame/layer.

Frame 1: I have this option.
Frame 2: almost the same frame but there is no such option. Am I missing something?

Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out. The icon should appear as follows:

  • For layers: You can switch modes if at least one variable is applied and the variable offers multiple modes.
  • For groups, frames, components, component sets, and sections: You can switch modes if any nested layers have at least one variable applied with multiple modes available.

Could you please double-check the above? If you’re still not seeing the icon, would you mind sharing the file with us for further investigation?

Thanks,
Toku

Do I understand it correctly, that I can only apply a mode variable to the frame if any other variable is already applied to the elements in thee frame? Sounds complicated. Do you have this information in you variables guide or somewhere? Thank you

My apologies for forgetting to include the link earlier. Here’s the detailed article: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/15343816063383-Modes-for-variables#h_01H3ADKDF7JBTRV1Z5P1X1DZVE.

I believe you’re on the right track. If you encounter anything unusual while trying this out, don’t hesitate to let us know! If you could share the link to the file, we would be more than happy to take a closer look.

Thanks,
Toku
