Variables: Color alias with alpha / opacity (rgba ideally)

hey there!

variables seems to be super nice but what i am missing is that if i make a colour alias to a specific collection - i can’t set the opacity separately (e.g. colour 50 with 20% opacity)

So basically i want the colouyr to be from another collection and i want to set the alpha seperatly (controlled as rgba - since i dont need it as opacity)

Example how we can fix this in token studio:

So what i want is that i can set blue/5 and then the opacity (which i dont want to capture in another colour variable)

Now its only possible if i break the link with gray/75 - and then i loose the reference to that colour

Since Material2 it's been common to use opacity rather than unique colors, but it's still not supported in Figma variables without disconnecting the parent color, to stop needing painfull workarounds.

In code it often looks like this destructive/50 = 50% of $destructive

  1. I want to variable opacity without unlinking the parent color.

  2. I want opacity control in the UI for the linked color, like code.

Yes. I'm actually shocked this isn't a thing yet. Variables has been out for ages.

It would be insanity to bloat the variable collection with something that can be done simply on the dev side. +1

+11111 Opacity is a *core attribute of design*. Absolutely core. You’ve had two years+ to make it a valid variable target.

Adobe, why is opacity still not a variable?
You’ve got the funds. You’ve got the talent. If you lack clarity and direction, hire me. I know how to put UX first. You, apparently, do not. Let’s do this. Let’s get ‘er done.

yep I still need this, it will help reduce unnecessary tokens that don’t need to be in our design system
