Solved

"Sort by" does not retain the selection.

Every time I exit Figma and come back, the previously selected sort order is lost, and it defaults to "Last modified" – "Newest first". Previously, the selected sorting option was always preserved.

Hey both. Wanted to let you know that this was an intentional change on our end. From what I understand, the only page that doesn't reset preferences is the "Last projects" page now.

For more context: this was implemented after feedback from users who thought their files were missing due to filters or sort orders being enabled.

I know this was probably not the answer you wanted to hear, and I completely get why this would be a negative change to your existing workflow. I’m making sure that your opinions and feedback on this are also highlighted as well. We do take into consideration every use case, and want to be sure that changes we make benefit everyone who uses Figma.

Apologies that I can’t offer an alternative solution at this time.

If I misunderstood what your issues were, let me know. I’ll keep this open for now to get any other feedback on this you may have,

+1000
This used to work fine, then it started getting progressively worse. First it only reset on relaunch, now it does every time you bounce back and forth between two projects. Complete waste of time and a major annoyance.

I really appreciate the new features recently added to FIGMA, but please don’t sleep on basic stuff like this. There are some 20+ reports of the bug (feature?) in this thread alone – open for 7 months without any response from your side.

Fixing this would massively improve the experience for all of us. Thank you.

Adding +1 request to keep the last user choice on the dropdown permanent until the user decides to change it again - as it is the BEST UX PRACTICE.

Still having this issue, pretty poor UX to not even have it be up to the user how they want things to sort and it stay that way, you instead have to keep changing it multiple times a day.

Honestly moved away from Figma now

When is this going to be fixed? Users have been requesting this for over a year now. This is a basic, necessary function.

This is really embarrassing for you, Figma.

+1 here as well. This has been a major nuisance for our team since it forced to “last modified” as the default. Please go back to how it was before, especially now that the long awaited sub-folder feature has finally been added (thank you). I find it very frustrating being forced to sort alphabetically every.single.time.

Adding my +1 on this. Before,we manage to bypass this with coloured thumbnails but now with the new folder view the problem is back even stronger, it’s a real pain.

Allow users to set their own default sort preference

I’m still facing the same issue with sorting. If my preferred sort is alphabetical, why can’t I keep that as my default? It feels like such a simple thing, but every time files get sorted by “recent,” it becomes inconsistent and time‑consuming for collaborative work.

Now that we also have folder structures, this inconsistency stands out even more. A small UX detail like individual preferred sort options would make a big difference, yet it seems overlooked. That’s why I had to come here and raise it.

Can we please have the ability to set and retain our own default sort preference?

If already addressed can you update it again?
