Regression: text style picker search + keyboard controls

Feedback 1: since Figma Desktop App version 126.1.2 text styles picker always shows libraries of styles in collapsed state. It’s super annoying, since search doesn’t work until you un-collapse it.

Feedback 2: please fix up/down arrow behavior on styles. Example: the text span has style “Body/Emphasized” → I press arrow up expecting it to switch to “Body/Emphasized” → instead Figma selects “Headline/Regular” (the style that just happened to be below the search box). I papercut myself on this multiple times every day for the past couple of months now, at least.

Figma’s a great product, I love it, but bugs like these are a big let down for me. I believe basic features like text styles should be dogfooded more to remain best in class.

The collapsed text styles are SO ANNOYING. Please fix it.

The Typography > Text styles popover always shows library styles in a collapsed state. No matter how many times I expand them, they collapse again on each popover open. It’s extremely frustrating and really slows down my workflow. Is there any solution?

I’m experiencing the same issue 😩

Hey All, thanks for flagging this issue!

I completely understand how this must be slowing down your workflow. I’ve combined a couple of topics into one, so that our team has all of your feedback in one place.

That said, our team confirmed that it is currently expected for UI Kits to be collapsed. With a bit more context, our team can look into this further.

Can you please confirm if this is happening for all text styles or just the UI Kits that you currently have installed?

@djv only to UI kits I have installed.

The bad part is that they’re unsearchable, not that they’re collapsed – why do I have to “uncollapse” it about 50 times a day whenever I look for a very specific named style? It defeats the whole purpose of a search bar.

I have no idea why it’s expected because it wasn’t happening 2-3 months ago.

This is terrible and I will uninstall all external UI kits because they were made unusable and there seems to be no fix in sight.

@djv Please show this to the team. It’s the single most annoying thing in my 9 years of using Figma.

Thanks for your reply, @ooolzhas, and thank you for clarifying that it’s only the UI kits you have installed.

I watched the screen recording you attached and can confirm that our team has an accurate description of what you are seeing and will triage and handle this accordingly. While I don’t have an ETA on any changes to this, I greatly appreciate you making the recording so we’re all on the same page.

One interesting thing I noted from your video… It looks like it actually completes the search even though the library remains collapsed, so that if you search and then expand it you then see the results of searching. Is that correct? I just want to note if that’s the case, because it might save someone time if they think it didn’t work and delete the search query before expanding.

@adamsmasher It’s correct, the search happens, but the result is visible only when you click uncollapse, which is confusing

As I said it hasn't been a problem until 2-3 months ago — the results were always there uncollapsed, which makes me think it's an accidental regression

@adamsmasher @djv it seems like it got fixed today

Thank you for addressing this, it was the single biggest frustration in 9 years of using Figma

Hey @Fabio_Pizzano, thanks for chiming in here!

Since @ooolzhas reported it resolved back in May, this might be associated with the latest update. To make sure we pass the right details along, could you share:

  • Which version of the Figma desktop app you're on? (You can find this under Figma menu → Help → Open log files or in About Figma)
  • Whether this is happening across all UI Kit libraries or specific ones?
  • A quick screen recording if you're able, like the one shared earlier in this thread. This would be incredibly useful for the team to confirm the repro.

In the meantime, a workaround that may help: try typing your search query first, then expand the collapsed library. The results should already be filtered when you open it. Not ideal, but it can save a few clicks while the team looks into this.

Thanks again for taking the time to report this recent regression!

Hey @djv sure, here are the info:

Figma Desktop App version: 126.6.12

It happens with the pre-made UI Kits, such as iOS26, Material 3, Simple Design System, etc.

  • What I noticed is that when I use an empty file with only the pre-made UI Kits, the issue doesn’t happen. It starts happening when I import my libraries.
  • My expected behavior, as it worked in previous Figma versions, is that the menu opens on the selected color or text style, exactly as it does when a color or text style from my library is selected.

Thanks
