Keep Comments pinned to design elements (including nested)

+1. … please make this possible at least as ‘copied comments’

This issue is incredibly frustrating and has resulted in our team pretty much abandoning the comments feature on many projects because the slightest change in content throws everything into chaos. We desperately need a way for comments to attach to lower-level elements so that when content is adjusted in auto-layouts for example comments don’t break.

+1 Comments in general are undercooked (a to-do system where you could assign people would be good) But this is absolutely the biggest pain point.

Same here. This does not work. This is the only feature why I switched to Figma from Invisionapp which supports commenting feature in a seemless manner. Not I am regretting switching to Figma.

Also, this solution will not work if you are commenting in Preview mode and commenting as a feature is mostly used by external stakeholder who are not UX designers and for them they prefer to see in preview mode where they won’t have to care about all the layers that UX designer has put together.

Adding some of my thoughts to this.
Many designers are on teams that use Jira or something similar, however, those are not made for design tasks. I’ve found myself, my fellow designers on the same team, my designer friends, and several others, to take notes of things requiring updates/changes in a Figma file using the Comment tool. Sometimes the stakeholders also jump in and give us feedback or requirements on the designs directly through comments. If this usage is a thing, then just like comments under Jira issues and Git commits and PR review notes and so on, the comments should be able to be part of a trackable history of design changes - how a need arises, what was done to address what, what became of a thing that previous was something else. This means two things are needed for the current comment tool/panel/feature to be more useful: (1) each comment needs to be pinned to a specific element and the user should be able to choose what element (or what level of frame/section/group etc) the comment is pinned to. IDK, maybe allow the Comment tool to click on an item in the Layers panel and that comment is pinned to that element? (2) when I’m trying to copy a link to a comment, I MEANT to copy a link that takes me STRAIGHT to that comment - not to the page the comment is on, not to the top-level frame the commented element is in, and even I don’t have show resolved comments turned on, I should still be able to see that (resolved) comment in its context by clicking on that link.

Still need better control with comments. Option to pin to a specific element. If deleting that element pin to the parent or convert to floating. I’d be fine with needing to manually re-pin a comment if I delete the element. But moving things around and chasing down comments is such a time hole! Working with a team spread across time zones and comments are so important for communication.

Hello, I’d like to add to this discussion as well to hopefully include the pinning of comment regions on the Frame, too. We are teaching our stakeholders to comment on Figma files, whether it’s clicking to pin a particular part of the frame or if it’s to select a region. Specifically for selecting a region when leaving a comment, if the underlying Frames or elements move in some way, the selected region still stays in place and then loses context on where it was originally placed in the first place.

Hoping the Figma team can work on this. I am loving the weekly Thursday updates for this second half of 2023, but I hope this particular 2-3 year old issue can be improved on.

Commenting has been kind of useless on most projects. Commenting should be locked to a frame or object. Sometimes it actually does but not all the time and I’m not sure why/not.

There could also be a separate “notes” fuction (such as in idunno…any number of plugins, other applications or ugh FigJam!?)
