Dear Figma Team,

Currently, when an element is locked in Figma, it poses a significant challenge to easily unlock and manipulate it thereafter. This results in a frustrating experience for users, as it becomes cumbersome to locate and manage locked elements once they are locked.

I propose implementing a feature that allows users to easily select and unlock locked elements with minimal effort. This could be achieved through one of the following methods:

1. Right-click functionality: Enable users to right-click on a locked element and unlock it directly from the context menu.

2. Keyboard shortcut: We continue with the keyboard shortcut Cmd + Shift + L to quickly toggle the lock status of selected elements.

3. Lock icon indicator: Display a small lock icon near locked elements, allowing users to click on it to unlock them.

The key differentiator with this proposed improvement is that although locked elements can still be selected, they will remain immovable and unaffected by global actions. This ensures that while users can interact with locked elements, they will not inadvertently modify them unless specifically unlocked.

By incorporating these enhancements, users will experience improved efficiency and usability when working with locked elements in Figma, ultimately enhancing their overall workflow and productivity.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I believe it would greatly benefit Figma users and contribute to a more seamless design experience within the platform.

Best regards, Andrés Sanz

  1. Currently if you right click the locked item directly, it gets selected.

  2. If there are other items covering it so it’s not the first item to be selected, you can use Select layer menu to cycle through layers under cursor. Quickly access it by Cmd/Ctrl + Right click. It shows the locked items with a lock icon.

Does this help?

Of course, it was a great help! Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me.

Don’t you think the interaction is a bit strange?

Although the selection is not visible, you can only access it with the right mouse button, and if you try to unlock it, you will only find this hidden easter egg?

Don’t you think this interaction could be improved?

If it were possible to select it in ways other than right-clicking, such as using a keyboard shortcut or clicking on the page structure tree icon in the left side menu. This selection, instead of having the usual blue colour, would have a grey border to indicate that it is “disabled” or “locked”.
