The new feature of copy and pasting variables over to new collections is a great addition, however its not currently usable. One major improvement that needs to happen— when pasting into the new collection the order of the variables is completely messed up, it should retain the organization from the original list.

Also better yet it would be immensely helpful to just have a duplicate collection option.

Thanks for all your hard work Figma team.

Agreed, not maintaining order makes managing say 100+ variables really cumbersome and very prone to error. Additionally, I’ve experienced further issues with variables pasting:

  • Variables tend to paste in the first group only, and you cannot paste into a selected group.
  • Undo (either via ‘command/ctrl + z’ or using the toolbar) does not undo pasting variables and effectively ‘skips’ this action

Fully agree! Since variables are most useful for multi-brand systems, copy-pasting is an essential part of the workflow. The sorting is extremely time consuming and error prone.

I’d add that it would be nice to have the ability to copy and paste on a group level.

Having right-click options and tooltips for copy-paste actions would also add a lot of clarity.
