Add Variable support for Letter Case

It would be really helpful to be able to use a variable to set a Type Style’s Letter Case (under the Type Settings meatball menu).

It could be a String Variable, and the options would be “As entered”, “Uppercase”, “Lowercase”, “Title case”, and “Small caps”.

I personally use modes to switch between different brands, and some brand styles require uppercase while others don’t allow it. This suggestion may be a small feature in the grand scheme, but I wonder if others would also find it useful.

Found a workaround for this and created uppercase only versions of our fonts. That way for elements like headers that we want uppercase in the other brand, we chose the “AllCaps” font file instead of the regular one.

Ask ChatGPT to tell you how make an uppercase only font and it’ll give you instructions. I used FontForge. There is some sleuthing you might need to do in the properties to make sure these sit at the family/grouping level you want but I got it done in an afternoon.

+1 we really need this to simplify the documentations and telling designers when to use type casing across brands

Need this. Currently forced to use Figma Text Styles instead of Variables because uppercase isn’t supported. I am leading design on a multi-branded mobile app design system.

Still no progress? This is really really 101 typesetting style stuff.

I agree, this would be so helpful! Also setting up a design system that need to cater to different brands.

I can’t believe Figma added motion to the product before adding this functionality. This is a workflow killer to not have case be controlled by variables. 😖
