Figma Motion Feedback

The announcement of Figma Motion had me excited, but right now it feels like a more advanced prototyping mode. I understand that it’s still in Beta mode and I hope in the future it will actually be usable for integrating motion in a design system.

Animation between states
If I take a button from our brands design system, it would be very helpful to be able to keyframe states and variants. Maybe take a page from Rive’s book and add something like a State Machine.
Text animation
Text animation is non-existent at the moment. If we want to create an animation of text being typed I’m not sure how we achieve this.
Tokenization
When exporting JSON, there are no tokens visible in the JSON file, it’s just raw values.
Preset Animations
The preset animations are nice and all, but it would help immensely to be able to make a library of our own animations, so we can quickly build out motion components.
Styles/Choreographies
Similar to how you can add multiple values to a typography and apply it as a style (combining values for multiple properties like line height, font weight, font size etc.), it would be amazing to be able to construct choreographies that we can reuse. I want to be able to make for example entry and exit choreographies that automatically apply duration, easing curve, offset/translation, scale etc properties.
Interactivity/State Machine
As I mentioned in the first part of the feedback, the current Figma Motion feels more like Prototype Mode+ but it’s also lacking some prototyping capabilities. For example playing an animation on user interaction would be amazing. Even if it’s just to prototype things and to showcase how motion should work on components, without being able to export the interaction itself it would be immensely useful.

Would love to know if these things are coming in the very near future, in order to make Figma Motion usable :)

Hey @MMarinov

Thanks for taking time to write up this detailed feedback.

Although at various levels of development we have been working on all of the items you’ve mentioned.

We announced at Config during the Motion Deep Dive that Transitions, Text Animations and Custom Styles/Presets will be coming soon. We will be starting to test these externally in the coming weeks.

We definitely will provide a key framing capability to vertex points on vectors as well.

Please do keep pushing Figma Motion and raising your feedback!

Hi @MMarinov, Celyn from the Figma Community Support team here.

Thanks so much for taking the time to put together such a detailed write-up!

This is incredibly helpful, and I really appreciate you walking through your use cases and the areas where you think Figma Motion could better support design system workflows.

I've shared your feedback with the team so they have the full context, and I'll post here if I hear anything I can pass along.

Thanks again for taking the time to share such thoughtful feedback! 🙌

Hey @Celyn_L ,thanks for the quick reply. I’m really hoping to finally have the ability to contribute to our design system through Figma instead of going to other tools. If you have any questions regarding my feedback I’d gladly answer :)

Pass my greetings to the team as well :)

One more thing I would add here would be vertex/path animation

I created a community Figma plugin called Motion Path that lets you select an object and a path, then automatically generates the animation in Figma Motion for you.

Simply select an object and a vector path, and the plugin automatically generates Motion Path, Path Reveal, and Auto Rotate animations and more with fully editable keyframes, customisable timing, direction, and easing, while supporting both open and closed vector paths.

The plugin includes 300+ ready-to-use examples covering the most common animation use cases.

You can learn more about its features here:

Would be nice to have a better snap on time segments. Feel like when working with the motion key frame header, it should have a more confident snap to the time segements as this makes it easier for equal spaced motion on the time line. If granularity is needed we still have the manual way of editing as test near the motion controls.

Looks like it’s at 100 but the value states 101
