Figma Motion Feedback

The announcement of Figma Motion had me excited, but right now it feels like a more advanced prototyping mode. I understand that it’s still in Beta mode and I hope in the future it will actually be usable for integrating motion in a design system.

Animation between states
If I take a button from our brands design system, it would be very helpful to be able to keyframe states and variants. Maybe take a page from Rive’s book and add something like a State Machine.
Text animation
Text animation is non-existent at the moment. If we want to create an animation of text being typed I’m not sure how we achieve this.
Tokenization
When exporting JSON, there are no tokens visible in the JSON file, it’s just raw values.
Preset Animations
The preset animations are nice and all, but it would help immensely to be able to make a library of our own animations, so we can quickly build out motion components.
Styles/Choreographies
Similar to how you can add multiple values to a typography and apply it as a style (combining values for multiple properties like line height, font weight, font size etc.), it would be amazing to be able to construct choreographies that we can reuse. I want to be able to make for example entry and exit choreographies that automatically apply duration, easing curve, offset/translation, scale etc properties.
Interactivity/State Machine
As I mentioned in the first part of the feedback, the current Figma Motion feels more like Prototype Mode+ but it’s also lacking some prototyping capabilities. For example playing an animation on user interaction would be amazing. Even if it’s just to prototype things and to showcase how motion should work on components, without being able to export the interaction itself it would be immensely useful.

Would love to know if these things are coming in the very near future, in order to make Figma Motion usable :)

Hey @MMarinov

Thanks for taking time to write up this detailed feedback.

Although at various levels of development we have been working on all of the items you’ve mentioned.

We announced at Config during the Motion Deep Dive that Transitions, Text Animations and Custom Styles/Presets will be coming soon. We will be starting to test these externally in the coming weeks.

We definitely will provide a key framing capability to vertex points on vectors as well.

Please do keep pushing Figma Motion and raising your feedback!

And in the import queue, it would be nice if, in addition to the file name, they showed us the name of the slide we're exporting. It's true that the image helps, but it would be even more helpful to see the slide's name instead of the name of the person exporting it.

My slides are named according to the order I want to apply to the final layout, which I have to do in Premiere because you can't add audio when exporting videos.

I believe the simplest way to introduce audio support in Figma Motion would be:

1. Trimming Audio Clips

The most intuitive way would be to allow trimming a clip by dragging its ends on the timeline, just like in tools such as Premiere Pro or After Effects.

In this case, the behavior should differ from that of animations. Currently, modifying the duration of an animation adjusts its speed, but this is not usually useful for audio files. Changing the playback speed alters the pitch of the sound: speeding it up makes voices and sounds higher-pitched; slowing it down makes them lower-pitched. Unlike animations, where varying the speed is commonplace, this behavior is rarely desirable in audio.

Therefore, dragging the clip's ends could simply hide the excess portions and adjust its visible duration, offering a very simple solution for trimming audio without needing a dedicated cutting tool.

2. Volume Adjustment

Volume control is a basic but very useful feature for combining different audio clips and music tracks.

This would allow, for example:

  • Balancing the volume across multiple clips.
  • Adding background music while dialogue or sound effects play on parallel tracks.
  • Easily creating fade-ins and fade-outs.

Implementation could be as simple as allowing the user to click on the clip's volume line to create control points. These points could then be dragged up or down to increase or decrease the volume at specific moments. With two or more points, it would be possible to create smooth volume transitions without requiring more advanced tools.

To delete a control point, simply select it and delete it as you would any other element in Figma.

If you select the clip and click outside the volume line, you can delete the entire clip.
