Question

Video stays frozen on first frame in Figma Motion preview and MP4 export, even as a separate layer

Hi everyone,

I’m testing the new Figma Motion feature and everything feels very intuitive so far, but I’m running into an issue with video playback.

The Motion animation itself works correctly, but any video used inside the animated frame stays frozen on its first frame. This happens both in the Motion preview and in the exported MP4.

At first, I thought the issue might be related to using the video as a background fill. However, I also tried placing the video as its own separate layer/object inside the frame, and the result is the same: the video still does not play. It remains frozen on the first frame.

So the issue does not seem to be related to the video being used as a background. It seems more like Figma Motion is treating video fills/video layers as static images.

What I have checked so far:

  • The video is inside the animated frame.
  • The video was tested both as a background fill and as a separate layer/object.
  • The Motion keyframes work correctly.
  • The issue happens both in the Motion preview and after exporting to MP4.
  • The exported MP4 contains the Motion animation, but the video itself remains static on the first frame.
  • The video file is imported correctly in Figma and appears as a video layer/fill.

Has anyone else experienced this with Figma Motion?

Are videos currently supported inside Figma Motion animations, or are video fills rendered as static images for now?
Is there any known workaround to make an embedded video play during Motion preview and MP4 export?

Environment/details:

  • Figma Motion
  • Export format: MP4
  • Video tested as: background fill and separate layer/object
  • Video format: [MP4]
  • Video codec, if known: [H.264]
  • Export size: [1080x1350]
  • Frame rate: [30 fps]
  • App/browser: [Figma desktop]
  • OS: [macOS]

For now, my workaround would be to export the Figma Motion animation separately and composite it with the original video in an external video editor, but I’d really like to know if this is supposed to work natively inside Figma Motion.

Thanks!

Hey @XavierLagriffe 👋 Thank you very much for the detailed write up. I’d like to get this onto support. Would you be able to share, in the support ticket, the following?

I figure the answer is yes and I don’t want to assume 😊Talk soon! — Jaycee

Hi Jaycee,

Thank you very much for your help!

Yes, absolutely. I already have the screen recording showing the issue, as well as the exported MP4 where the problem is visible. My return include both files, along with the Figma file link shared with View access to support-share@figma.com.

For context, the issue is reproducible on my side: the Motion animation works, but the embedded video stays frozen on its first frame both in the Motion preview and in the exported MP4. I tested the video both as a background fill and as a separate layer/object, and the result is the same.

Thanks for escalating this to support.

Talk soon,
Xavier

Hi,

Im having the same problem, and I would probably have to also export the Figma Motion animation separately and composite it with the original video in an external video editor, but already spent a lot of time working on this project in figma motion  :(

Hi @Jaycee Lewis
I’m running into the exact same issue with Figma Motion right now. I’m currently right in the middle of an active client project and trying to plan our next steps. Could you share an estimated timeline on when this might be fixed? It would help me immensely to know if I should wait for a Figma update or if it’s better to temporarily pivot to another tool for this specific animation.

Thanks so much for bumping the priority on this and for your help! 🙌

Hey, @roxanagon  @Maura Benitez  would either or both of you be able to grab a not-zoomed-in screen recording of this happening? I’d like to get support tickets for all in this thread open so we can track impact. Talk soon! — Jaycee

Hi @Jaycee Lewis, I am also having the same problem. Can I also be updated on this issue? I am working on a workflow for a current project. I would like to keep most of the process all in figma.

I am having a similar issue. The embedded video will play in preview but stays frozen when rendered as an MP4. It stays frozen on the first frame as described by other users in the forum.

Thanks! Dana

Same issue. We can drag and drop in mp4 videos into the canvas and frame and we can see them play, but they don’t play (remain static) once the Figma Motion file is exported. Even in the preview phase right before export, any video files in the frame don’t play.

Hi @Giulian, Celyn here stepping in for @Jaycee Lewis. Thanks for chiming in here.

I've gone ahead and created a support ticket for you so the team can take a closer look. Your case number is #2008344.

If possible, could you reply directly to the ticket with:

  • screen recording showing the behavior, if possible
  • A link to the impacted file, and invite support-share@figma.com with “Can View” access (this won’t impact your billing and will allow us to reproduce the issue and investigate further with Engineering).

Thanks again, and please keep an eye on your inbox for updates from the team.

Hello, same issue for me. I’ve tried pretty much everything that the OP and other replies have checked. It seems like this feature isn’t available just yet. Any updates? Thanks for your help.

Common causes include using a static image instead of the actual video asset, placing the video inside a component with unsupported properties, or having timeline settings that prevent playback.

Hi @Noah Sykes, thanks for chiming in!

Our Engineering team has rolled out a fix for this - could you please close any active export tabs and try exporting again?

Let me know if you're still running into the issue after giving that a try, and we'll be happy to take another look.
