Question

Video stays frozen on first frame in Figma Motion preview and MP4 export, even as a separate layer

Hi everyone,

I’m testing the new Figma Motion feature and everything feels very intuitive so far, but I’m running into an issue with video playback.

The Motion animation itself works correctly, but any video used inside the animated frame stays frozen on its first frame. This happens both in the Motion preview and in the exported MP4.

At first, I thought the issue might be related to using the video as a background fill. However, I also tried placing the video as its own separate layer/object inside the frame, and the result is the same: the video still does not play. It remains frozen on the first frame.

So the issue does not seem to be related to the video being used as a background. It seems more like Figma Motion is treating video fills/video layers as static images.

What I have checked so far:

  • The video is inside the animated frame.
  • The video was tested both as a background fill and as a separate layer/object.
  • The Motion keyframes work correctly.
  • The issue happens both in the Motion preview and after exporting to MP4.
  • The exported MP4 contains the Motion animation, but the video itself remains static on the first frame.
  • The video file is imported correctly in Figma and appears as a video layer/fill.

Has anyone else experienced this with Figma Motion?

Are videos currently supported inside Figma Motion animations, or are video fills rendered as static images for now?
Is there any known workaround to make an embedded video play during Motion preview and MP4 export?

Environment/details:

  • Figma Motion
  • Export format: MP4
  • Video tested as: background fill and separate layer/object
  • Video format: [MP4]
  • Video codec, if known: [H.264]
  • Export size: [1080x1350]
  • Frame rate: [30 fps]
  • App/browser: [Figma desktop]
  • OS: [macOS]

For now, my workaround would be to export the Figma Motion animation separately and composite it with the original video in an external video editor, but I’d really like to know if this is supposed to work natively inside Figma Motion.

Thanks!

Hey @XavierLagriffe 👋 Thank you very much for the detailed write up. I’d like to get this onto support. Would you be able to share, in the support ticket, the following?

  • a screen recording of the issue happening
  • a link to the file, with View access shared to support-share@figma.com

I figure the answer is yes and I don’t want to assume 😊Talk soon! — Jaycee
