Unable to select any objects or frames

Hey everyone,

I updated Figma this morning and everything was working fine for a few hours, then suddenly it just stopped letting me select anything. I can’t click on objects, frames, or even use the hand tool to pan around. It’s like the whole canvas becomes unresponsive.

At first I thought it was just a glitch - I restarted my Mac and that seemed to fix it temporarily. But it’s happened again, and this time restarting or reloading Figma doesn’t help at all. I even tried switching from my pen tablet to a mouse in case it was a hardware issue, but the problem persists.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Restarted the Figma app

  • Reloaded the file

  • Restarted my Mac (temporary fix)

  • Switched input devices (pen tablet → mouse)

Nothing seems to work, and I’m basically stuck - can’t select, move, or pan anything.

System:

  • macOS 26.0.1

  • Apple M1 Ultra

  • Figma desktop app (latest version, updated today)

This is extremely frustrating and blocking my work - has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions or workarounds would be massively appreciated.

Update: the issue persists on the web version and using a personal account.

Hey @ru.au, welcome to Figma Forum, and thanks for flagging. Sorry you’re running into this — it definitely shouldn’t be happening. I tested on a Mac and was able to select frames and objects as expected (using both the browser and desktop app), so it sounds like something potentially more specific to your setup.

Really appreciate how clearly you laid out the troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried — it’s interesting that restarting helps temporarily before things start freezing again.

To help narrow things down a bit more, could you confirm a few details?

  • Are you still seeing this both in the Figma Desktop App and browser?
  • Which browser are you using? (You can double-check that it’s supported here: What are the system requirements for Figma?)
  • What version of the Figma Desktop App are you running? Please make sure it’s 125.8.9 or later.
  • Any browser extensions or background programs that might affect performance?
  • Does it happen in all files, or only after interacting with certain components or frames?

If the behavior continues, our Technical Quality team can take a closer look. You can start that process by filling out this form and including:

  • the link to this Forum thread for context
  • a link to a file(s) where this is happening
  • Can edit access granted to support-share@figma.com
  • a quick screen recording showing the behavior.

Thank you again for the thoughtful report and patience as we help get things running smoothly again.

I’m having the exact same issue. Started today. Tried the same steps as above. Restarting the computer temporarily fixes it for a few minutes. Nothing else helps.

Oh this is weird. I have trouble clicking things in this Figma forum page. Can’t click the Send button below. Had to use tab+enter. Makes me think this is outside Figma. WIll investigate more.

@Mattias_Andersson1 Strange, my issue was only localised in Figma only. But that said, maybe it’s OS Tahoe bug? Assuming you’re on it?

@Tom Reem I’ve not been able to replicate the issue since Friday, so unfortunately I can’t provide any screen recording. Yes, I’m on 125.8.9, and the issues started happening when I updated to said version. No chrome extensions that would raise eyebrows. And yes, it did happen to all files and on 2 separate accounts (work specific account, and personal account, not teams). If I experience the issue again, I will submit the form, until then, there’s not much point without any ‘evidence’.

Here’s a screen recording. It’s still only in Figma and this forum page! Can’t click links above wither!

This happens on all flows, app and browser. But only on the canvas, all other UI is accessible.

Thanks for following up and confirming, @ru.au — I’m glad to hear things seem to be working again! Please keep us posted if anything similar comes up.

@Mattias_Andersson1, thanks for chiming in — sorry to hear you’re running into the same behavior. Could you confirm if this happens across multiple files? It also looks like your screen recording didn’t attach; would you mind re-uploading it here?

I still haven’t been able to reproduce the issue on my end, but seeing it in action and gaining file access where it’s happening would help our team take a closer look.

Same here.

This is supposed to be a “Pro” app!
No internet, no work. Figma not in the mood, no work.

I'm absolutely f******* annoyed with this web trash!

Hey @UnableToSelectAnyObjects — totally get how frustrating that must have been, and I apologize for the disruption. If you’re still having trouble selecting objects or staying connected, could you share a bit more about what happens right before things freeze up?

A quick rundown of the steps leading up to it would help me take a closer look and work on getting things running smoothly again. 🙏🏻

I also cannot select stuff in the main view in Figma. I can select stuff in the left hand sidebar though. Using macOS 15.7.2 (sequoia), Safari/Chrome.

Using the macOS desktop app works fine.

Hi @Jonny Bergström — thanks for weighing in and letting me know that it’s working in the Figma Desktop App as expected. Are you still running into this issue in the browser?

If so, I’ve sent an email with next steps for connecting with our Technical Quality team. If you’re up for sharing access to the file where this is happening, it will help us pinpoint the cause and work toward a resolution.

Your case number is: 1627015. Really appreciate your patience and collaboration as we get this sorted.

@Tom Reem

So I looked into this a bit more yesterday, and I found out this:

  • 1. as mentioned above, the desktop app still works fine
  • 2. in the Figma document I use most often, I still couldn’t select things in the canvas; selecting in the left hand list still worked
  • 3. Things worked normally in a separate recent Figma document

So regarding 2, I realized that if I opened Preferences and enabled “Ctrl + Click opens right click menus”, I could once again select things from the canvas (Ctrl+clicking, I used to do normal simple clicks). This solves the issue for me, for now. And if anything I can still use the desktop app of course.
