Unable to Remove Unused or Auto-Generated Figma Slides Styles

Hi Figma Support team,

I’m running into an issue with unwanted colours appearing in the Design-mode colour picker in Figma Slides, and I’m hoping to understand whether this is expected behaviour or a limitation.

Summary of the issue

Even after fully cleaning my Slides template so that every element uses only my defined template colour variables, the colour picker in Design mode still shows many extra custom colours that are not used anywhere in the file. These appear to be leftover colours that were automatically created when pasting designs from regular Figma Design files into a Slides file.

What I’ve tried

  • I replaced all existing colours with my new template colours

  • I verified that none of the stray colours are used in any layer, component, or style.

  • I also confirmed that this only affects Design mode, not Slides mode, where only the correct template variables appear.

The core problem

These extra colours appear to be orphaned, auto-generated colours with no UI to remove them, even when they’re completely unused. They clutter the colour picker and make it difficult to maintain a clean colour system inside a Slides template.

Expected behaviour

  • If a colour is unused and not part of a Slides theme, it should be possible to delete it.

  • Or at least, unused colours should not appear in the Design-mode colour picker.

Current behaviour

  • Stray colours persist indefinitely.

  • They appear only in Design mode, creating visual clutter.

  • They seem to originate from copy/paste actions from Design files.

Impact

This makes it difficult to maintain a clean colour system for a shared Slides template. These lingering colours introduce confusion and inconsistency when designing inside Slides.

Questions

  1. Is there currently a way to delete or reset unused or auto-generated colours in Slides?

  2. Is this behaviour expected, and are there plans to give users more control over colour management in Slides?

  3. Is there a recommended workflow to avoid these stray colours appearing in the first place?

Thanks so much!

Colours look fine in Slides Mode
Loads of stray messy colours in Design Mode that can’t be removed

Is everyone around here ever able to use Template styles in Figma Slides?

EVERY time we paste a slide from another presentation, it creates a ‘new’ template so we end up with a dropdown full of slightly similar templates styles and it is impossible to delete them unless I switch every culprit style to the ‘main’ style. But doing usually changes things around so we just gave up trying to use them 😭

Here is a screenshot of the dropdown in most of our slide decks:

Hi,

It seems like we can’t delete a Layout guide Style after creating one in Figma Slides… And how do we delete a Template style when we have more than one in a deck?

This is basic features, yet somehow it’s so hard to find, or doesn’t even exist.

Having the same issue, I used to be able to delete any unused style once I made sure all the slides were the same. However, the delete/bin icon has disappeared now. It’s getting messy!

Hey All, thank you for flagging this and apologies for the delayed reply here!

I completely understand how this could be affecting your workflows. I’ve flagged this over to our Slides team, and they are aware of this issue. They’re already working towards improving this in the future.

Yes! I’m having this issue as well. Really annoying. Did you find a fix?

I find Figma Slides to be annoyingly under-cooked, which is strange given how long it’s been out.

It’s only getting worse and worse as we copy paste slides from various decks all the time, PLEASE FIX THIS SOON, let us delete templates styles !!!!

I realize that today as well, Figma Slides is so half-baked….

We also discovered it is not possible to delete Layout guides once you create one, great ….

Figma Slides template management is just non-sensical UX at this point (with so many bugs that I’ve been reporting many times..) and yet Slides has received zero improvements whatsoever in more than a year.
( We just continue using it because Powerpoint and Google Slides are still 10 times worse 🤷‍♀️ )

Same - it’s worse than ever. We’re moving back to Google slides, even though we can’t use custom fonts in slides, having those is not worth the nightmare of Figma’s half baked slides function

Having this issue right now with colors also—it’s just the same two colors labeled “custom style” over and over again burying my actual template miles down the list

Hey All, thanks for continuing to share your feedback!

We appreciate you flagging this and sharing how it’s impacting your workflows. I completely understand how frustrating this can be, especially when it slows things down in practice. This is still something our Slides team is aware of and actively tracking.

While I don’t have any new updates to share just yet, I’ve passed along the recent feedback here to help reinforce the impact and priority. As soon as I hear more on potential improvements, I’ll be sure to update this thread. Thanks again for your patience and for continuing to surface these details. It’s genuinely helpful for the Slides team.

Big +1. This is such a huge pain and makes templates (what should be a core feature) almost unusable in Slides –  copying and pasting content from different places to assemble decks is a very common workflow. Today, doing so makes it extremely difficult to cleanly manage the styling of a deck.

Thomas Whitehead

Slides is potentially such a good product,
Our team loves the grid layout, auto-layout and being able to utilise all our library assets – it is the difference between our organisation needing 5 and 30 Figma seats, far more so than any Ai feature – but this issue makes it impossible to manage all our decks at the scale we need.

Have you ever been in slides and had the problem of 1000% different style templates cluttering up your deck?

Well quit hitting your head against your desk because we have a solution for you! (unofficial but tested!)

1: Copy all your slides into a Figma Design file

2: This is an opportunity to double check all your type and colour styles and remove any duplicates or things that are slightly off, or near to finalised colours for eg.

3: Copy all your final frames into a new slides deck. Et voila! There should now be one single style template present in this fresh Slides deck.

Why does this happen in the first place you might be asking?
When you copy from multiple sources, multiple  presentation decks, various figma design files, those styles are carried over and given their own style template. So you can see how if multiple people are pulling in from multiple sources things can get out of hand pretty quickly.
From here you can refine your type and color variables much more easily.

The single source copy paste seems to solved the issue for us!

Good luck out there!

@djv has there been any update to this? Our company slides are falling apart with a spam of different colour styles that have been brought in - and the team is getting really frustrated with our move to figma slides - I can’t believe how much updates have slowed

Hi @LucasRhys, thanks for following up!

No new updates or a timeline to share from the Slides team yet. I'll be sure to update this thread if/when that ever changes. Thanks again for your patience.

Thanks for the update but what a shame to hear this @djv .. Figma Slides hasn’t receive much improvements in the past years, yet it’s a product we have to use every single day and loose so much time on finding workarounds for these shortcomings.

We hear you, @Margot_Gabel

While I wish there was more I can do, please be assured that Slides team members are keeping an eye on this Slides thread as well as others. 👀 @Conor_Woods

It’s your continued honest feedback that will help my team advocate on your behalf, as well as allow the Slides to to best prioritize future improvements.
