The search bar is not focused when using + or Cmd+T to open another file

I recently updated Figma and now when I’m in a file or on Home and click the [+] in the top bar to open another file - the search bar isn’t focused anymore.

I have to go and click on it to start searching where before it was focused by default. It’s really annoying.

Tabbing doesn’t work either - it cycles through already open files from left.

Hello community.

It was released earlier when you open a new tab there was a focus on the Search bar so you can immediately start typing filename to open it. Just like in a browser when you open a new tab the focus is on the adress bar. I get used to it and now this function is gone (latest release, Windows) so I struggle every time I want to open a certain file via new tab button. Alternatively it could work if you press Tab button one or several times. However now Tub button doesn’t jump to the Search bar, it just jumps across tabs and header icons.

When I type cmnd+T to create a new tab I used to be able to immediatley start typing to search from my files. Now I have to click into the search bar before I can type. Oof.

Just really annoying.

Came here to post this – was a real timesaver to just start typing like in a web browser. Please revert to the original approach with an active field!

Seconding this! I am a big keyboard user, and this change is killing me. I oversee a lot of projects and a lot of files that I am very accustomed to navigating without my mouse. Switching to mouse to click the search bar hurts. Figma Desktop app (v 126.0.4) on a Mac (iOS Tahoe 26.2).

Yeah, this has been an unnecessary interruption for me. Hoping it returns to the way it was soon. I am using the MacOS app.

Hey @Tanya_Hirst, thank you for flagging this.

I was able to reproduce the same behaviour on my end. I’ve shared this with the team internally so they’re aware and can take a closer look.

Really appreciate you calling this out, small workflow changes like this can have a big impact. I’ll update here if I hear anything back.

I often need to search for a file or open another file quickly. To do this I’ve learned to hit ctrl+t to open the “new file” window, which has a prominent search bar.

In the past I believe the search box would be focused when this view loads, so I could immediately start typing a search term. I learned ctrl+t, then type a file name or search term.

It’s no longer in focus, and I have to click into it. I can’t figure out how to keyboard navigate into it even if I wanted to; hitting “tab” just moves me across top-level figma tabs, and I don’t know how to get into the “new file” page at all.

This is a very small feature that has a big impact on my day, as I need to search for or open new files often throughout my day. I was using ctrl+t as a sort of “quick switcher” to move between files, but now having to move the mouse + click really ruins this as a workflow.

Hi @RJ04, thanks for your feedback!

I’ve merged your topic with a similar, existing one here in the community. Please know that this issue is on our team’s radar for reconsideration.

We’ll provide an update as soon as we hear more from the team.

this change is such a regression. dropdown upon input focus already has recent files as well, so there is no need to have to click on input field for this, as page atm is only usable to type what we are looking for. and it’s such a known UX pattern. Please put back cmd + T focus on search input field.

I keep typing on the opening of a new tab and don’t realize immediately i’m not focused on the field

Hey All, thanks for your patience while our team has been investigating and working on the fix!

I’ve combined a couple of topics into one here, so we can keep the messaging from the team streamlined. Our team is almost ready with the fix and hope to begin rolling it out soon.

We’ll let you know as soon as it does, so you can try refreshing your tabs to see if the fix has hit your account.
