Question

Problem for selecting an item within other items by clicking

After the new updates in Figma, I cannot select an element within other frames or components by clicking and multiple clicking on it. Another problem is that I cannot edit a text by multiple clicking on it to select the whole text.

I test it on both application and web app (using chrome browser)

Is it just my problem or other experience it as well?

Hi @Niloofarf, thanks for reaching out!

I completely understand how this must be disrupting your workflow. We have seen a similar click-selection issue reported before, but a fix went out for it last April. A couple of quick questions so we can pin down what's going on:

  1. Could you share the specific element type you're trying to select (e.g., a component instance, a frame, a group)?
  2. Does this happen in every file, or just one? If it's reproducible in one file, would you be able to share that file link (with Can view access) or a short screen recording?
  3. For the text issue, does a single click let you enter edit mode, but multi-click just won't extend the selection, or does clicking not register at all?

In the meantime, as a temporary solution for the nested-selection issue, try holding Cmd (Mac) / Ctrl (Windows) while clicking. This will jump straight to the nested layer instead of needing multiple clicks. With these addition details, we can flag this over to the team to investigate.

Thank you for your support and information. I tested the issue across different files and projects.

From my observations, this problem seems to occur primarily in large pages that contain a lot of data.

I checked which files were causing issues and found that when I zoom out, I can select items by clicking, even in complex frames with many nested elements. However, when I zoom in, I'm unable to select items. Interestingly, if I copy the complex frame to a lighter file or project that contains fewer items, the selection works as expected after zooming out.

Moreover, the problem does not affect every page in the files where I experience issues; it specifically occurs on heavier pages containing numerous components and nested frames. I've recorded a video to demonstrate the problem, where my clicks are indicated by red circles.

Hi @Niloofarf — Tom here, stepping in for @djv today.

Thanks for testing across multiple files and for the screen recording — I can see what you mean. I tested this on my end and selection is working as expected, so the conditions you've identified are really useful for narrowing this down.

My only other question at this point would be, are you running Figma Desktop App version 126.6.14 or later? There were some selection reports from the previous release, so it's worth double checking.

That said, given what you've described about this being page-specific and file-dependent, I've opened a case so our Product Support team can take a closer look at the specifics. Please check your inbox for an email from me on case: 2022394, with steps on sharing file access securely.

Once we can replicate this issue, we'll escalate to engineering for further review. Appreciate your patience and let us know if anything changes in the meantime. 🙏🏻

Hey @Niloofarf, touching base with a quick update. I checked in with the Engineering team. A fix went out in a recent release for the selection issue I mentioned earlier, and it may relate to what you're seeing.

It might not be the exact behavior you ran into (understood that your report looks page-specific and tied to heavier files) but it's worth re-testing to see whether selection now works as expected on your end.

If it's still happening, no problem: You can reply to your case: 2022394, with the Product Support team and they can keep digging into the zoom/file-weight conditions you pinned down.
