When I publish a file as a library in Figma, it seems the naming conventions are being completely ignored when digging into the assets panel to grab components. it keeps the Page as a folder, but then ignores everything else and just displays the components at the deepest level.



  • in this case, i have a page called “Feature Item.”

  • Inside are two sections: “Vertical” and Horizontal."

  • inside Vertical is “Feature Item Group / 4 column”, “Feature Item Group / 3 column” and “Feature Item Group / 2 column”

  • inside Horizontal is “Feature Item Group / 2 column”, “Feature Item Group / 1 column”.

when I publish this as a library and go to the assets panel in a file to grab components, the only folder that exists is the page “Feature Item”, and components are listed only as “1 Column”, “2 Column” “2 Column” “3 Column” and 4 Column which completely ignores the entire naming structure established and removing all context from the components.

The instance swap menu respects the folder structure and the naming convention, but grabbing the component to begin with is impossible without a bunch of error because the folders are gone.

Is this a bug on my end? Can this be fixed? Is this by design? if it’s intentional it’s terrible. it means i have to be redundant in component names because organizing components is impossible. I am also relatively certain this has not always been the case, but i may be mistaken.

I believe I have the same issue. I am building out a sign in experience, and have my input trailing icons in a frame called ‘icons’ (I prefer to not use variants for icons for various reasons) and an instance swap property on the icon in the field. When I go to an instance and click the icon to swap the instance, I get as options everything that is on the same page as the ‘icons’ frame. This definitely used to not be the case, and using sections or frames would create a sublayer of navigation when browsing assets, either as in the assets panel on the left or instance swaps. This has only appeared in maybe the last few days, two weeks tops.

I only use variants for icons for super similar things like Arrow/Up Arrow/Down Arrow/Left Arrow/Right or Heart/Outline Heart/Filled but i JUST noticed i’m having the same issue with my Icons file as well! we organize icons into categories (travel, commerce, file, controls, etc) and now the assets panel just lists all the icons together alphabetically with no organization or folder structure. it’s really frustrating organizing a file so specifically so as to work within Figma’s folder structure just for the library to be unusable to the end user.


@JackieChui sorry to just @ you like this, but you’re the one who replied to my last major Figma issue and helped get resolution, any comments on this issue?

I believe you can bring the subfolders back by turning this setting on in the settings menu

Thanks, this is the ticket! IMO this should be the default setting, as we can already search things by name, and the alternative is ignoring the naming structure Figma encourages for components, adding redundancy, and removing context from different components.


i know Figma is always trying to streamline processes, but sometimes i think they remove too much friction and remove context clues and important information users need to succeed.
