Figma MCP use_figma tool is missing in Codex/ChatGPT

Hi Figma team,

I’m seeing the same issue: the Figma MCP connection works for read tools, but `use_figma` is not exposed.

Available tools:
- get_metadata
- get_screenshot

Missing tool:
- use_figma

Context:
- I’m using Codex with the Figma MCP integration.
- The target is an existing Figma Design file, not a FigJam board.
- Read access works against the file and target frame.
- I’m trying to confirm whether `use_figma` is unavailable because of my current plan/seat, or whether this could be an account-side feature flag issue.

Target file:
https://www.figma.com/design/c4QoVCrffuIfQbhmRigY6J/Untitled?node-id=1016-3506

Target frame:
Screen/Messages/Mobile/PrivateChat/AttachmentPanel
Node ID: 1536:1428

Could someone from Figma confirm the exact plan/seat requirements for `use_figma` write-to-canvas access, and whether Education plan accounts can access it in any setup?

You can contact me at h2odumpling.luca@gmail.com if you need any additional details.

Hi everyone. The issue preventing some Codex and ChatGPT users from seeing MCP tools, such as use_figma, has been resolved. You can find the latest updates on our status page. Thanks again — Jaycee

Hi Figma Support,

I’m using the official Figma plugin in ChatGPT/Codex desktop. The plugin connects successfully and exposes several Figma tools, but the use_figma tool is unavailable.

use_figma is available when I use Figma through ChatGPT on the web, so the difference appears to be specific to the desktop surface.

The Figma tools currently available to me on desktop are:

  • add_code_connect_map
  • create_new_file
  • generate_deck
  • generate_diagram
  • get_code_connect_map
  • get_code_connect_suggestions
  • get_context_for_code_connect
  • get_design_context
  • get_figjam
  • get_libraries
  • get_metadata
  • get_screenshot
  • get_variable_defs
  • search_design_system
  • send_code_connect_mappings
  • upload_assets
  • whoami

Missing tool:

  • use_figma

I have already selected and connected the official Figma plugin. Could you please confirm:

  1. Whether use_figma is officially supported in ChatGPT/Codex desktop.
  2. Whether its availability depends on my Figma plan, seat type, workspace permissions, or a staged rollout.
  3. Whether there are any additional settings or authorization steps needed to enable it.
  4. Whether this surface difference is a known issue.

Environment:

  • Client: ChatGPT/Codex desktop
  • Operating system: macOS
  • Comparison: use_figma is available in ChatGPT web
  • Figma plugin: Official Figma plugin

Thank you.

Hi @Elliot Teo, thanks for chiming in here!

Codex is officially supported for use_figma, and there's no separate authorization step or staged rollout gating it. The requirement is a Full seat plus edit access to the file you're writing to; Dev seats get read-only workflows.

Since you're seeing it on ChatGPT web but not desktop with the same account, this points to the Codex desktop client rather than your Figma account. Two things worth checking:

  1. If your Codex workspace is admin-managed, new tools may need admin approval before they appear. Worth confirming third-party plugins are allowed and the current tool set is approved.
  2. Try removing and reinstalling the Figma plugin in Codex desktop, and make sure Codex itself is on the latest version. The plugin's tool list is versioned, so an older client can show a smaller set.

If you want to unblock yourself now, you can skip the plugin and add our remote server directly: Settings → MCP servers → Add server, type Streamable HTTP, URL https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. Full setup steps are in Codex and Figma: Set up the MCP server.

Let us know, if this helps! Otherwise, we can continue troubleshooting together.
