Copy and pasting designs across files changes component states ramdomly

This is so frustrating. I have never had this issue before with Figma, but I’ve been trying to copy over designs from a past file to my current working file and it changes a bunch of the components to random states. I have triple checked my libraries are all configured correctly (published and linked). All I am trying to do is copy over a previous design into a new file. Please assist!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your patience!

Our engineering team has released a fix that should resolve the issue with new pastes.

Please close and reopen Figma for the fix to take effect, then copy and paste any previously affected content again. Let us know if you run into any issues.

Thanks again for bearing with us!

Since this morning, we have been experiencing some issues across two different Figma files/environments. These appear to be related to the same issue reported by Halie regarding component management and Design System library updates.

As also described by @Halie Homan, when copying and pasting frames from one Figma file to another, for example from File 1, which is updated to the latest version of the Design System, to File 2, the properties of some components are modified seemingly at random.

The issue also occurs when repeating the operation on the same frame: each time it is pasted, the properties of different components are altered, with no consistent or reproducible pattern.

To identify and resolve the issue, we have tried the following procedures:

  • Using Figma’s native Repair component connections plugin.
  • Using Figma’s native Repair variable connections plugin.
  • Using the Repair component set versions feature.
  • Forcing an update of the Design System library.
  • Restoring the previous version of the Design System.
  • Closing and reopening Figma.

Despite these attempts, the issue persists, and we have been unable to find a solution.

We have also identified a second issue in files that are not aligned with the latest version of the Design System.

In these files, Figma repeatedly indicates that library updates are available, even when they relate to versions published several months ago.

For example, the library may display a message such as “Last update: 2 hours ago”, which reappears or is prompted again even an hour later, as if the file had not yet been updated.

Furthermore, when proceeding with the update, Figma also suggests updates related to much older versions, in some cases dating back as far as four months.

I’ve been having the same issues. When copying over modified components from one file to another, the copied version gets reset to the Design System default.

When trying to log it in the “Ask Support” Chat - it says that this is expected behaviour.

What a waste of time, now to re-created the component in a new file. I don’t want to have to completely detach the main instance (plus all sub-components like buttons, headers, lists) from the Design System, but seems like I don’t have any choice.

I am experiencing the exact same critical issue today. I’m trying to copy screens from one file to another, and all components instantly break, switching randomly to completely incorrect variants and states upon pasting (they are not even default - random sizes and states).

I have tried reloading, checking libraries, repairing all instances and repairing the component connections, tried in the Figma app and in the browser, but nothing works.

Hopefully, the engineering team acknowledges this quickly, as it's completely blocking our handoff workflow!

Same here! I’ve never experienced this issue before but it suddenly started happening today. Whenever I copy and paste designs from one file to another, the components become a complete mess. The variants and states randomly change and many components lose their original configurations. I have to manually go through each one and restore its original state which is very frustrating and time-consuming.

I’ve already tried reloading my files, restarting my laptop, and resetting and restarting Figma through the Troubleshooting option in the Help menu but nothing has worked.

Everything was working perfectly fine just yesterday. Hopefully the team can investigate and resolve this as soon as possible!

The same issue occurred to me this afternoon. I spent whole afternoon to figure out what happened to my library. But i think this is figma’s bug. Hope it gets fixed asap.

Same issue here. I tried switching to the browser web version and using the beta version as well—nothing fixes it. Everyone on my team has been reporting this since at least yesterday afternoon, but I only noticed it today after updating the app.

I hope this gets resolved soon because it's already delaying our planned releases.

I updated Figma today to get rid of the blue ‘Update’ badge on header and since then so many components has been broken and have been rendered incomplete. Content gets missing, Layers are hiding, components are scaling, partly components are broken. Requesting help to recover previous Figma version.

Hey @Chetan_Yadav1 - I saw your post that is related to this, and merged it here. We are looking into this!

Same here! We thought it was our libraries and settings, but we now believe it’s a Figma issue. Could it be a clipboard issue? Our whole team is experiencing this issue, and it’s causing designers to become a bottleneck. Please fix soon.

same here! A few weeks ago, we were experiencing trouble with brand names swaping on appearance mode list and now, issues on components instances when loading variants as well
