The client has shared a file with me and given me “can edit” rights, but I cant edit. I am getting this error “An Admin needs to update your seat so you can edit file”. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi @Elena Moiseeva, thanks for reaching out!

Did you ever get edit access to the file? If the client that invited you to the file was an admin or existing editor with "can edit" permissions, you typically should have been granted a full seat immediately to allow editing, depending on the team's available seats and settings.

If you did not receive edit access right away, usually refreshing your tabs is enough to trigger the recent change. If you’re still having issues, please let us know.

I have the same issue, and as the admin, I went to the member page in my team and I cannot change anyone’s seat at all. There are no seats to change. I have yet to find a solution to this issue.

Hi @AWC Tech — thanks for following up here. I removed the screenshot you shared to protect your account privacy, as it contained some personal information.

I've addressed this in your other thread: Unable to access due to 'the admin need to update these seat' — please check there for next steps. I appreciate your patience as we get this sorted out. 🙏🏻

I have the same issue. My colleague have given me access to a document, but I can only see and not edit. It says that an admin needs to grand me access. But it looks on their site as I have that already. Can you help us? :)

Hey Karla, thanks for reaching out!

Since this appears to be a seat/permission issue on your colleague's team, could you first ask them to double-check that a seat is actually assigned to you on their end (Admin → People), not just that the file's sharing permission shows "can edit"? Just making sure the file-level permission and the actual seat assignment are sync.

If they've confirmed that and you're still seeing this, refreshing your tabs is usually enough to trigger the update. If the issue persists after that, this would need a closer look from our team. Could you please submit a bug report in the Support Hub / Type “Report a bug, Contact an agent” / Click Start a chat / select Enter and follow the prompts. Please include:

  • A link to the file
  • A screenshot of the error message you are seeing
  • Your email (the person needing access)

That'll let our team check the account settings directly and figure out what's going on. Thank you!
