VS Code extension — tips if you're having trouble getting set up

Hi there,

The Dev Mode team are looking into the problems some people are having while trying to get started with the VS Code extension, and hope to have updates out soon, but for now have asked us to share the following tips:

The extension is not currently compatible with VS Code Insiders though we’re hoping to have support for this soon. For now we suggest use the regular VS Code version if you’d like to use Figma for VS Code: Download Visual Studio Code - Mac, Linux, Windows
If you are are stuck in a loop of VS Code asking you to “Accept terms and conditions” please log into VS Code before connecting in Figma.

You can log in to the VS Code extension by:

Clicking the Figma icon in the sidebar of VS Code
Clicking “Log In” and following the instructions
You can then click “Open in VS Code” in Figma however, you may need to accept our Terms of Use to allow VSCode to connect.
In order to accept the Terms of Service, you’ll need to click “Next” in the Dev Mode modal.

In order to accept the Terms of Service, you’ll need to click “Next” in the Dev Mode modal.

I am not seeing a Dev Mode Modal… am I missing something? I do not see a Modal when turning on the dev toggle, nor a “Next” button. Any help would be appreciated.

I installed the beta version, and I tried setting the preferred language for codegen. But when I clicked “Browse codegen plugins,” nothing happened. I was looking to install the Anima plugin for code generation or the Figma to Code plugin. Anyone know any workarounds?

I can’t login, I press the login button, log in on Figma, but then I get the following error in VS Code, which I am not sure what it means

Your user has idle timeout configured and is not currently able to use Figma for VS Code

+1 I am experiencing the same issue. Is this a bug of the beta? Since our enterprise plan and security setting do require the idle timeout settings it would be a real impediment to not be able to use the plugin with these user settings.

Ran into this issue today (on Mac) with the idle timeout error message. Is there still no solution for this?

Here are the steps you can take:

Log out of VS Code: Close all VS Code windows and sign out of your account.
Clear VS Code cache: Go to the following folder on your computer:~/.vscode/extensions Delete all the files and folders in this directory.
Reinstall the Figma extension: Open VS Code and go to the Extensions marketplace. Search for “Figma” and install the official extension from Figma.com.
Relaunch VS Code: Close VS Code and then open it again.
Connect to Figma: In VS Code, go to the Figma tab and sign in to your Figma account.

If the problem persists, you may need to try the following steps:

Reset VS Code settings: Go to Code > Preferences > Settings. In the search bar, type “reset” and click on “Reset settings”. This will restore all VS Code settings to their defaults.
Uninstall and reinstall VS Code: Download the latest version of VS Code from the official website and install it. This will overwrite your existing installation and may resolve the issue.

If you have tried all of these steps and the problem is still not resolved, you may need to contact Figma support for further assistance.
