We’re encountering an issue where we are unable to use the search functionality on a file. Specifically, we use keywords inside of component properties, exactly like outlined in Figma documentation here:

https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/7938814091287-Add-descriptions-to-styles-components-and-variables

The Figma documentation explicitly says this is possible:

“Figma will look at component descriptions when returning search results. So you can use descriptions to tag components with relevant keywords.”

We’ve had this work flawlessly in the past, but are suddenly unable to search by descriptions for components or variables at all. As well, some components aren’t even showing up by exact name in search results! This is happening both on files with many hundreds of components, and test files with only 5 or so components.

We’ve tried publishing the file, reloading Figma, etc, with no luck.

Hi there,

Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. I tried it on my end, and everything seems to work fine, but my sample size might not be enough. It looks like you’re already in contact with our support team, so please continue to keep in touch with them!

Thanks for your patience!

Toku

Thanks @y_toku – I haven’t heard back from the support team about this issue yet, and it’s still not working on any of our files.

We apologize for the delayed response. It seems our support team is now handling your case. Thank you for getting back to them. They will review your file, so please be patient.

Thanks!

Toku

Before I file a support ticket, could I get confirmation on whether the search should be working at a Variant level? It seems to work at the “Component Set” level, but the search ignores everything inside the “Selected Variant” description. Do I have that right?

Thank you. I did hear back from Figma Support, but the ticket didn’t fully address the issue.

We have a large component (a set of icons) and each Variant frame has individual descriptions. We are unable to search for content inside of the Variant (or their Instances)'s descriptions.

@y_toku would this require a new, separate support ticket?

Hi @r_sh,

You don’t need a separate case and please directly reply to them! Our support team will look into your case again. I hope you can clarify the things soon!

Thanks,

Toku
