Question

Permissions

Antonio Terranova

While using figma for free we were able to collaborate with multiple people. Once We decided to buy some roles we lost access and others can only view rather than help.

Is this normal?

Hey @Antonio Terranova, thank you for reaching out!

To cover some basics: The Starter plan is a free tier that allows users to create and manage design files with certain limitations. Users on the Starter plan can create a single team, but they are restricted to 3 files and 3 pages, and one project they can have. This plan is designed for individuals or small teams who do not require the advanced features available in the paid plans.

For unlimited files and projects for a single team and advanced prototyping tools and easier dev handoff the professional plan is needed.

Every member and guest on the Professional has a seat type that determines which Figma products they can access. You assign a single seat for each user on your plan, and the seat type determines which products they have access to.

In both the Starter and Professional plans, team members permission like can view, can edit, admin, or team owner, and those permissions determine how they can access with files and projects. It’s possible that when you upgraded, some of your collaborators seats were set to a free View seat. They can View and comment access to Figma Design, Figma Slides, and FigJam. No access to Dev Mode; basic inspection only.

To fix this, I recommend adding new seats and adjusting their permissions in the team settings. These resources explain how permissions work on each plan:

Let me know if you'd like help walking through the steps to update those permissions — happy to assist!
