Figma Icon in the macOS dock changed to white

Is there anyway to bring back the black background for the figma icon?

Hey everyone, thanks for confirming your macOS versions!

Our app icon has both a light and a dark version, and macOS switches between them based on your Mac's overall Appearance setting (System Settings > Appearance), not anything inside Figma itself. Set to Dark, you'll see our darker icon; set to Light, you'll see the newer, lighter version from our recent icon refresh, which is the intended design rather than a bug.

That's also why the in-app Theme setting didn't change anything for @Denis_b. Figma's Theme preference only affects the look of the Figma interface itself. Your dock icon follows your system-wide Appearance setting instead, separately from that.

@Jon Taylor, to your point on Apple's standards. We do already provide both light and dark variants, so that part's in place. The gap is that macOS doesn't let you select one independent of your system-wide setting; that's a platform-level constraint for every app, not something we can toggle on our end alone.

@Jarek Gąska, to directly answer your question: right now there's no supported way to get just Figma's dark icon while keeping the rest of your Mac on Light mode. A few options if you want to explore anyway:

Switch your whole Mac to Dark mode (System Settings > Appearance) to get Figma's dark variant along with everything else that supports it.
If you'd rather stay in Light mode, macOS Tahoe's Icon & widget style setting (same Appearance panel) has a Dark option that forces a darker treatment across your compatible app icons. But that applies system-wide, not just to Figma.
The manual Finder step-around I shared above still works if you only want Figma's icon changed, though it can reset with app updates.

I don't have a timeline for a Figma-specific option here, but I've made sure this thread's feedback is in front of the team that owns our app icon. I'll keep this open and update it as soon as I hear more, appreciate the detail everyone's given me.

Hey @Jarek Gąska - do you have your display settings set to dark mode? That should turn the app icons in your toolbar to have black backgrounds. Or are you wanting just the Figma app to have a black background?

Settings > Appearance should be the place to make any custom adjustment there.

@ksn I’d like to change just that Figma icon, is it possible? Cause if I check dark mode, all of the icons will turn to black bg.

Same here. After update the icon is set to white. Now it’s too similar to photos/slack. And no, changing 100% of icons to be hardcoded dark versions is not a solution. I just want icon to be what it was yesterday

The in-app appearance settings only has the Theme and when set to Dark it still keeps the app icon white

Hey everyone, thanks to everyone else who's chimed in here! I’m stepping in on behalf of @ksn to help here.

I want to get you an accurate answer on the dark mode question rather than guess, since it looks like results might vary. Would you both mind sharing which macOS version you're on? That'll help me figure out whether this is tied to a specific OS version rather than something else.

I don't have a fix or a timeline to share yet on bringing back the darker icon, but I've made sure this feedback. Including how often it's coming up here and elsewhere, is in front of the team that owns our app icon.

In the meantime, if you'd like to restore the old icon just on your own machine, you can do this manually through Finder:

Find Figma in your Applications folder and select it.
Press Cmd+I to open the Get Info window.
Drag or paste an image of the previous icon onto the small icon thumbnail in the top-left corner.

Just know that's a system-level customization outside of Figma, so it can reset when the app updates, and you'll need an image of the older icon on hand to use for it.

I'll keep this thread open and update it as soon as I know more, thanks for your patience while I sort out what's going on with the dark mode behaviour.

@Gayani_S thanks for response! Your solution works, as for original issue, I’m on tahoe 26.5.1, I updated Figma today which is when icon got changed to white one. I was postponing the update for a while, so could be some older one

All of my designers are asking for the dark icon since the light one returned. Can you guys not adhere to the Apple design standards for including both versions that get used depending on the system setting for Dark or Light?
Third-party applications require developers to supply native dark or tinted variants.

I also have to scan now to find the new light Figma icon in my tray. Not a fan. The dark one was so much more recognizable and did not blend in with the other app icons in my tray.

The manual Finder step-around is helpful but you must have admin rights -- which I don’t for work. I was able to change the icon on my personal macbook but my work one still has the white version that gets lots with all the Microsoft icons on white!
