Is there anyway to bring back the black background for the figma icon?

Hey everyone, thanks for confirming your macOS versions!

Our app icon has both a light and a dark version, and macOS switches between them based on your Mac's overall Appearance setting (System Settings > Appearance), not anything inside Figma itself. Set to Dark, you'll see our darker icon; set to Light, you'll see the newer, lighter version from our recent icon refresh, which is the intended design rather than a bug.

That's also why the in-app Theme setting didn't change anything for @Denis_b. Figma's Theme preference only affects the look of the Figma interface itself. Your dock icon follows your system-wide Appearance setting instead, separately from that.

@Jon Taylor, to your point on Apple's standards. We do already provide both light and dark variants, so that part's in place. The gap is that macOS doesn't let you select one independent of your system-wide setting; that's a platform-level constraint for every app, not something we can toggle on our end alone.

@Jarek Gąska, to directly answer your question: right now there's no supported way to get just Figma's dark icon while keeping the rest of your Mac on Light mode. A few options if you want to explore anyway:

Switch your whole Mac to Dark mode (System Settings > Appearance) to get Figma's dark variant along with everything else that supports it.
If you'd rather stay in Light mode, macOS Tahoe's Icon & widget style setting (same Appearance panel) has a Dark option that forces a darker treatment across your compatible app icons. But that applies system-wide, not just to Figma.
The manual Finder step-around I shared above still works if you only want Figma's icon changed, though it can reset with app updates.

I don't have a timeline for a Figma-specific option here, but I've made sure this thread's feedback is in front of the team that owns our app icon. I'll keep this open and update it as soon as I hear more, appreciate the detail everyone's given me.

Please allow for us to go back to the dark icon. This update is way too similar to Slack and it’s very confusing as I switch back and forth between applications.

The light version of the icon confused me so much that I spent several seconds looking for the app in my Dock and completely overlooked it. I honestly thought I might have accidentally deleted the app, and I only found it by searching for it.

For now, I’ve manually changed the app icon back to the dark version, but it gets reverted after an update, which is not ideal.

It would be great if you could add an option in the settings to choose whether the app icon should be dark or light.

Appreciate that detail, @Hamid R Mousazade - our team is continuing to track feedback and that’s an important detail.

I just marked @Gayani_S ‘s most recent reply as a “best answer” since it includes the most current way to get the dark icon back. It sounds like you’re using the latter option in that (changing the icon within the Finder). Have you tried the System Settings option, or do you not want to change all your desktop icons to the dark version? I mention it because that should stay the same after app updates.

sorry if im repeating others - but yeah, the issue is my OSX appearance IS set to dark mode, but its still showing the white icon.

Feels like its a figma bug - it should be showing the dark mode icon given my whole mac is set to dark mode?

on an older OS 15.7.9 (24G830)

My Mac is set to dark mode (System Settings > Appearance) and the icon is white. I have to change the icon & widget style to dark, which I don’t care like. I want the Figma icon to be dark again but not enough to change all my icons to dark.

In the meantime, if you'd like to restore the old icon just on your own machine, you can do this manually through Finder:
Find Figma in your Applications folder and select it.

Press Cmd+I to open the Get Info window.

Drag or paste an image of the previous icon onto the small icon thumbnail in the top-left corner.

I’m completely lost about step 3. Where/How do I get an image of the previous dark icon? I’ve spent hours on that, trying to find it online or extract it from the MacOS app package content, to no avail. Where can I obtain the .icns file with dark background??
