It seems I can drag+drop groups into another order, however, 99.9% of the time this places a group inside another group, rather than before or after it.
Yeah, so frustrating!!
++, it’s impossibly frustrating to try to re-order groups right now
Also struggling to reorder my groups once I have created them!
I have also had this issue. It’s very “buggy”, but I got it to sort of work. However, even though the groupings are now in the order I want, the individual variables in that grouping were re-ordered, which made them in that order when picking them in different elements in the file. I re-ordered the individual variables in the grouping to how we wanted, but for some reason, it will not update to that order when picking them for an element in the file (or even in another file where that library is enabled). This is causing a major headache, so I really hope Figma fixes it very soon.
Very, very buggy. Blue focus-like state when dragging would indicate that you are dragging into another group, vs the black line between groups to reorder at the top level, but dragging and dropping always places the group being dragged into the folder above the line. And even if you do manage to successfully move a folder, it flips all the contents bottom-top. Really frustrating.
Sooo annoying. It would be great if there was a handle or something that allows to differentiate the intention of moving the group from the opening. Currently, when you press the item to start dragging up/down, it opens the group. When the group is small, it makes the window smaller and you can’t navigate through the menu.
Please, please fix it.

Yeah if I’m dragging a group between two groups, where it shows a horizontal line, it really should be placed between those two groups. Only if I place it onto a group, with the group highlighted, should it be placed inside of the group.
Everyone in the team is basically cussing every time we try to arrange variables. Since the release of variables reordering variable groups simply doesn’t work correctly. It is buggy and we had variables published with the wrong nesting for having had them accidently moved into the wrong group while trying to arrange them.
PS. Reordering component variants works very nicely, why not have something similar ??
I hope this will be fixed one day.
Hi there,
Thank you for providing feedback! I will share this with our internal team. Your input is highly valued, and we will take it into consideration for future enhancements.
Thanks,
Toku
