If there is already a way to either turn off spellcheck, or to tell a FigJam file that I am working in a different language, or if that could be introduced, that would be great. I’m a new user and a Spanish teacher, and I am loving starting to use FigJam in my classroom, but it’s a bummer that most words are underlined in red!
Hey there, so sorry for the frustration!
You can enable or disable spell check from the Main Menu:
- Click on the Figma icon in the upper left-hand corner
- Go to Text > Spell check
- Click Check spelling to enable or disable spell check
You can also change your preferred spell check language from the Main Menu:
- Click on the Figma icon in the upper left-hand corner
- Go to Text > Spell check
- Select from the list of available languages
@dvaliao Norwegian language is not in the list, only English. How can I add Norwegian spell checking?
Hey @Steven6, sorry for the trouble!
I just checked in the desktop app and in browser, and Norwegian should be available by following the same instructions above:
Can you please confirm whether you’re accessing Figma via web or using the desktop app?
If you’re using the desktop app, this is probably due to Norwegian not being available on your operating system. Perhaps you could take a look at the languages available on your device, just to be sure?
Can you also please confirm which operating system you’re using?
Depending on your operating system:
- On Mac: Figma auto-detects and uses your system’s preferred language for spell check
- On Windows: If you don’t see the language you want to use, you may need to install a language pack (more detailed instructions on that here)
Hi @dvaliao
So I’ve checked and my machine have the language pack for Norwegian, and Win 11 uses Norwegian. My browser also uses Norwegian. Still, English is the only language showing up in my selection (see screenshot)
Thanks for the additional information!
Have you checked your Account’s Language under the main menu: Settings > Language > Change language?
After checking your Language under Settings, since it also sound like you’re using Figma in the browser, can you try clearing your browser cache to see if that helps at all?
Hi! I have the same problem and symptoms as @Steven6. When I follow your suggestion as of April 3, I only get the options for English and Japanese, see below.
So I would like to repeat the original question:
How do I add languages to the list of available spell check languages? (referring to the list you showed in your answer from Mars 21).
Figma support told me that I need to download and install Basic Typing.
This is installed at home so everything works. But as you can see, it’s not installed on my work computer. I’m in the process with IT to see if I can get it installed.
You will find it under language options.
This is happening to me too (everything being underlined in red) except my language is set to English (UK) and I’m typing in English (UK)… It’s also only recently started happening - it wasn’t before. I don’t recall when it started, but I noticed it in the last couple days in particular. I don’t want to entirely turn spell check off if I can avoid it, but it’d be great if it worked properly.
It seems to be happening in both sticky notes as well as text boxes. I’m sure it’s happening in other elements where I can input text as well, but I haven’t tested.
Hey @Stella2, thanks for flagging this!
I just tested this using a macOS device on the desktop app and a Chrome browser, and everything seems to be working and not getting flagged as misspelled:
To try and troubleshoot this further, what OS are you using? And are you using FigJam in the desktop app or the browser?
Hi! I’m using FigJam within my browser - Google Chrome Version 128.0.6613.138 - on a Macbook Pro running Sonoma 14.6.1
Thanks, @Stella2!
We have seen reports of Grammarly (or similar spellcheck apps/plugins) causing conflicts. If you have any of these installed, having them uninstalled or de-activated may be a good 1st troubleshooting step to check if they’re overriding our native spell check function.
nope, no extensions impacting spelling
Thanks for confirming, @Stella2!
Can you please try clearing your browser cache to see if that makes any difference?
We’re still not able to repro using the browser in FigJam. If clearing your browser cache doesn’t help, we may have to escalate this to our technical quality team to investigate further.
no luck it doesn’t seem to be isolated to just one board either - looks to be across everything.
Thanks, @Stella2!
Let’s try one last troubleshooting tip…
Can you please try checking your OS System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources - Edit… > Spelling, then toggle from “Automatic by Language” to “British English”?
Let us know if that helps!
nope that didn’t work either
Thanks for trying, @Stella2!
I’ve created ticket #1130317 on your behalf with our technical quality team. Someone from the team will review what we’ve tried here then continue troubleshooting with you directly.
Hello, this same issue is happening to me. I tried all the troubleshoots and no luck. My available spell check languages are English and Russian. I do work in English and French and would like to add French.
I also went to change the language on my main page in settings and have the exact same options as Bjorn_Larson.
Did anyone figure out this issue?
