As an editor or admin role, I can't edit files that used to be editable

We paid for 2 seats of Figma design, I checked the plan&billing are correct, and the roles are editor.

Neither my colleague and I can edit the files which should be editable, we have to click the button " ask to edit " , but admin and owner didn’t get the request, STILL can’t edit…

Hi @jenny_L1 ,
Can you ask to the admin, and the owner of the file to check if they can add you as “Editor” in the file directly?

If this doesn’t help, please reach out to our support team so they can investigate further: here

Hi @Celine_Figma ,

Thank you for the reply.

I’m the owner of the file, now I can edit this file, but it shows that I can view, and the message " This person can still edit, because they have edit permissions on the team the file is in"

Glad to hear you can edit now, thank you for the detail!

Hm, it still looks odd with “can view”. Can you share a screenshot of what you see in your end, and a copy of your file? It will help us to investigate further about your permission rights. Thank you!

Note: could you ask a user with “can edit” permission on this file to invite you to edit? That should immediately grant you edit permissions, and change the status to “can edit”. Let me know if it works!

Hi I have same issue here can you help me how to fix this.
our project needed the edit role

“admin and owner didn’t get the request, STILL can’t edit”

that issue still ongoing till now

Hey @tata_nugraha ,
Sorry to hear this is happening! This may happen because you got a “viewer” permission by default since you’re not the owner anymore. However, because you have edit access to the team and the project, it shouldn’t prevent you to work on this file. (please confirm your settings).

Still, I would like our team to investigate to check if there is any wrong permission settings. Please reach out directly to the support team here with a copy of your file (where you encounter an issue): here

Be sure to use your Figma account email, include a link to the file, and share it with support-share@figma.com so they can take a closer look. Thank you!

Hello @Celine_Figma
I am facing the similar issue. It looks like a huge bug.
Kindly try to fix this asap. Its affecting our work.

Hey @Kunal_Sahu ,
Sorry you’re also having troubles! I’ve re-checked internally with some similar cases, this usually also happens because of the file’s location.
Can you double check if your file is located in a view only project? To edit these files, you will need to be invited to the file(s) directly (please ask the owner of the project to invite you to the folder directly) or the project owner can remove the view only status from the project. They can do this by changing the permissions from the projects ‘share’ modal.

No matter your permissions on the team, the projects permission of view only will override your team level permissions.

Still, it would be great to have access directly to your file where you have an issue so our team can locate the file and see what may have happened. Please reach out directly to the support team: here

Be sure to use your Figma account email, include a link to the file you are wanting to edit, the names of users who can’t edit and share it with support-share@figma.com. Thank you!

@Celine_Figma I’m having the same issue and just submitted the request. We need the fix asap too. Designer is blocked.

Hey @Hannah22 ,
The support team replied to you. It seems your file is currently located within a view-only project. These projects give view access by default indeed. You would need to update the project so it’s no longer view-only. The project owner would need to click the Share button of the project and change the default access to “can edit”. Please check your inbox for more information. Thank you!
