Using shortcut styling breaking text styles

A great feature to have is text styles not breaking when a designer is using Cmd + B to bold a word or phrase. Currently it unlinks the text style and applies the bold to the underlying font. It would be great if there was a feature where when I use Cmd + B, it swaps to that text style in the library (where the style already exists) and updates in the property panel as well.

Hi @Josh_Paris, Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Currently, you need to open the “Edit text style” modal to edit, so your idea would definitely be handy.

This is a real issue. Using shortcuts like Cmd+B breaking the text style defeats the whole point of having a design system in place. Once the style gets unlinked, updates don’t propagate anymore, which creates inconsistency across files

A better approach would be mapping shortcuts to predefined styles (like semibold, emphasis, etc.) instead of overriding the base style. That way designers keep speed without losing structure.

For cases like this, I usually test different font weights and combinations outside the file first on https://onlinefontsgenerator.com/ so I know exactly which styles to define in the system before applying them in Figma.
