Temporarily hiding selection outlines

In other design tools you can simply press a key, and any selection outlines, grab handles, etc. get hidden while the key is down, so you can preview and evaluate how things look, without having to de-select everything and lose your selection.

Apparently there is no way to do this in Figma =(

This is important while experimenting with different colors, fonts, etc., and in Figma it could be used to see how different sizes, variants, and states, look in your design, without those selection handles and outlines getting in the way of you previewing things.

This was the first feature i wished for when i started using Figma years ago - and it’s still badly needed.

When fine-tuning spacing and alignment, the selection outline/bounding box often obscures the very edges and relationships you’re trying to judge. The current “disappears while moving” behavior doesn’t solve the core problem - it just forces you to keep nudging objects to get a clear view. That interrupts flow, adds unnecessary clicks, and makes precision work frustrating.

This isn’t just a small UI gripe - it’s part of a broader, modern phenomenon. As design and 3D tools grow in complexity, old selection paradigms are showing their age. In tools like Blender, for example, one object may need to be selected to perform a certain action, but another needs to be selected to maintain workflow continuity. These “master” selection models made sense in simpler times, but with today’s dense, interconnected workflows, they can break flow and cognitive focus. It’s time to rethink selection methodologies entirely - building systems that adapt fluidly to the user’s immediate context rather than locking them into outdated mechanics.

+10 · Some things seem so simple and would be massive quality of designer life improvements. It’s been 4 years. Will we ever see this happen?

Good design starts from clear perception. Adding this capability would make this 100x easier. And even a hairline frame can disturb the view of any more subtle drop shadow or foreground vs background colour.

As @Gleb wrote

Also you can always press Esc to deselect everything, then Cmd/Ctrl + Z to undo deselection.

If you’re doing this on a regular like me you might feel a little exhausted just by thinking of it.

I’d also love to see this feature in Figma. +1 🙂
