Reorder variable collections list

It’s been a year but the problem is still the same. Has anyone found a solution yet?

Variable collections are ordered alphanumerically, but you need to restart Figma in order to see the change.

I found a sneaky solution to this!!!

1. Update the name of the Collection you would like to appear first in the list and prepend it with a space
2. When you save it, it will show up at the top of the list—and the spaces won’t show in the Collection name except when editing! 😍
3. If you want to curate the order of the full list of Collections, you can use descending amounts of spaces to control the order—the items with the most spaces will show up first

For example, if you have 8 items you would like to curate the order of, add 8 spaces to beginning of the first, 7 spaces to the beginning of the second, and so on.

If you want to get fancy you can add dividers by creating empty collections using em dashes to show up as dividers, ordered using the same scheme as above.

Figma needs to bring back the “Little big updates” campaign again. However, I think we can wait a little longer and see what Config2024 brings. I’m looking forward to seeing them add this feature.

Unfortunately, this does not change the list of variable collections in the fill dropdown

I tried. it’s ok. You just reload. The order will be updated

wow. i can’t believe this is an issue. Please label variables as beta until it has minimum features.

edited: reloaded the page because the color swatch menu was getting stuck to mouse movement on selection (modal doesn’t go away, instead it just follows the mouse around) when the file reloaded, variable collections are now in a weird order. it’s not following the order it was created, or alphabetical, it’s just completely random. this is insane.

This needs really needs to be fixed… Same as last reply; Collection order is not following any logic. Suuuuper annoying.
