As a QA Engineer, I am working with Mind Maps that have large number of nodes and Due to the Collaborate-Friendly feature in Figma, I have moved to Figma from other Classical Mind Map creation tools like Xmind.

But, I have observed that there is no way to import mind maps to the FigJam boards using other mind map formats. In tools like Xmind, it has the capability to import mind maps from;

  • Other Mind Map formats: “*.mmap, *.mm,  *.lighten, *.mindnode, *.emmx, *.itmz...etc”
  • Makdown Files
  • OPML Files
  • TextBundle
  • Word(DOCX) etc

So, it would be really great to have that feature in Figma so it would really help for the ones who are willing to migrate their old Mind Maps to Figma(For Both Individual and Enterprise users).

Moreover, it is really nice to have the “Outline” view for the Figma Mind Maps. Therefore the users can get a Hierarchical view on the Mind Maps and also to easily export the Mind Map to a format like Markdown.

Hey @Jeewaka Amarasena

Great news - I actually built exactly what you're looking for! I created the Figma Mind Map Importer/Exporter Plugin that handles all those formats you mentioned and more.

https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1542146994098256095/figma-mind-map-importer-exporter-plugin

It supports importing from:

  • FreeMind (.mm)
  • XMind (.xmind)
  • OPML files
  • MindManager (.mmap)
  • Plus CSV, JSON, and others

And it exports to Markdown, OPML, FreeMind format, and more - so you get that outline view capability you wanted too!

The plugin converts everything into proper Figma/FigJam sticky notes with connectors automatically, so no manual recreation needed. Just drop your file, choose your layout, and you're good to go.

Perfect timing since you're migrating from XMind - this should handle all your existing mind maps seamlessly. The plugin is live in the Figma community now if you want to check it out!
