Define default padding for Auto Layout (or set to 0)

  1. Describe the problem your experiencing and how your idea helps solve this
When you create an autolayout frame, it always defaults to 10px. Many design systems call for an 8px grid and in many cases, users don’t want ANY padding especially where edge-to-edge designs are concerned.

  2. Ask questions to bring the community into the conversation
What are everyone’s thoughts about the following solutions?:

  • Default autolayout padding based on the big nudge amount in your settings
  • Allow for tokenization of padding/margin grids and offer up autolayout parameters based upon those tokens
  • Allow users to override the padding to 0px at the creation of the autolayout frame by using an alternative key command like ctrl+shift+a (command on mac)

OMG this is 4 years old?!
Whoever thought that 10 px would be the most common value users would want? 🤔

Classic Figma - an entire 3 pages of discussion where the is basically a consensus among their users… and not action. It’s like they themselves don’t have a UX team sometimes...

I'd op for a configurable default value - if you want 0, you can choose that but I'd like to be able to select a default spacing token from our design system.

+1 (not that it appears to be helping!)

Adding autolayout should NOT change the size of an existing frame. How is that so difficult ☹️

There could at least be an option to add auto layout AND not change existing layout (like you’d get removing it). There’s an option to “Suggest Auto Layout” which COULD add a default value, but it shouldn’t with the normal “Shift + A” command.

Please figma fix this. We don’t want your arbitrary 10px margins

This could live under the Nudge setting, for default values of some properties (gap, padding) which for me is also annoying. “Set default properties” doesn’t really save the properties for AutoLayout.

Yes, using Shift + A on a single item should default all spacing to 0px
