I also need this feature, currently I need to export the image from figma and then use a converter to turn those images into WebP before uploading them to the site.
WebP is supported almost everywhere and a standard when presenting images in the web. This would make the developers work easier and faster too, maybe have the export option only in dev mode..? Or under a setting if it still is too far fetched.
The most important factor is file size and WebP gives you small file size with reasonable resolution.
@Figma Please add support for webP formats.
Many of us have been requesting this feature for 2+ years. In the past 12 months, their usage have saw a 30% growth to about 18% of all websites. And due to their compression benefits, this growth is expected to grow to a quarter of all sites by this time next year. That means 1 in 4 sites will make use of webP.
The adoption rates is largely due to how Google developed and published the technology. It is open source released under BSD and fairly straight forward to integrate.
The big question is “Why has the Figma team chosen to not bake this into Figma?”

Totally agree with this! It’s such a hassle having to manually convert images every time. Adding a built-in WebP export option would save so much time and keep things more efficient. Since WebP is already widely supported, it just makes sense to have it integrated especially for devs who care about performance and page load speed.
