Dear Figma Product Team,
I am writing to formally request the inclusion of native artboard presets and enhanced tools specifically designed for foldable devices within Figma. As foldable technology rapidly matures and gains market adoption, designers are increasingly encountering complex challenges when creating adaptive user interfaces for these innovative form factors.
The Current Challenge for Designers:
Currently, designing for foldable devices in Figma requires significant manual effort and workarounds:
-
Manual Artboard Creation: Designers must research and manually create custom frames for various foldable models (e.g., Samsung Galaxy Z Fold/Flip, Google Pixel Fold, Microsoft Surface Duo) in their multiple states (folded, unfolded, half-folded/Flex Mode). This is time-consuming and prone to inconsistencies.
-
Lack of Standardized Dimensions: Without official presets, different designers often use slightly varying dimensions, leading to fragmented design systems and handoff issues.
-
Difficulty in Visualizing Adaptive UI: It's challenging to effectively demonstrate seamless app continuity, hinge awareness, and layout transformations across these distinct postures within a single, cohesive design file without a dedicated solution.
-
Growing Market Need: Foldables are no longer a niche. As more users adopt these devices, the demand for well-designed, adaptive applications will only grow, making robust design tooling essential.
Proposed Solution: Native Foldable Device Artboards & Smart Features
We propose that Figma consider adding the following:
-
Pre-set Artboard Dimensions:
-
Common Foldable Models: Include presets for popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold (all generations), Samsung Galaxy Z Flip (all generations), Google Pixel Fold, and Microsoft Surface Duo.
-
All Key States: Provide presets for:
-
Folded (Cover Screen): e.g., Z Fold (closed), Z Flip (closed), Pixel Fold (closed).
-
Unfolded (Main Screen): e.g., Z Fold (open), Pixel Fold (open), Surface Duo (dual-screen spanning).
-
Half-Folded (Flex Mode): Specific presets that visually segment the artboard for Tabletop Posture (top content / bottom controls) and Book Posture (left page / right page).
-
-
Orientations: Include both Portrait and Landscape variants where applicable for unfolded states.
-
-
Enhanced "Hinge" Visualization (Optional but Highly Valuable):
-
A subtle visual indicator for the hinge line on unfolded artboards.
-
Perhaps a "Hinge Guide" overlay that designers can toggle to visualize safe zones (areas to avoid placing critical UI elements).
-
-
Adaptive Component Tools (Long-term Vision):
-
Potentially, future tools that allow components to "transform" between foldable states within a single Variant set, streamlining adaptive design.
