File-level permissions within shared folders

The new nested folder structure is great, but there’s a massive (& massively frustrating) permissions gap: it seems file permissions can’t be more restrictive than the permissions inherited from the parent folder.

Our team has edit access to a shared folder, so every file within that folder is editable by the entire team and ppl can add folders & files as needed. There’s currently no way to make an individual file view-only without moving it outside of the shared folder structure.

This is a critical use case for master files, templates, brand guidelines & other source-of-truth files. These need to live alongside working files and be accessible to the broader team, but should be protected from accidental edits.

It’s essential to support file-level permission overrides that can restrict access below the parent folder level to a nested folder or individual file (Folder = Edit access → File = View-only)

Being able to share a folder broadly while locking down specific master files would make the new folder structure much more practical for larger teams.

Files always inherit user roles from the folder they're in, and you can't turn that off on an individual file. Anyone with an individual user role on the folder can open every file inside it.

You can give someone more access to a single file than their folder role gives them. You can't give them less.
