Figma should let local variables override external variables of the same name, just like CSS. For example, if a component uses primary-color from an external file, I should be able to override it in my local file by creating a variable with the same name and modes. This would make working with external components and theming far easier.

Yes, please I soo need either this or another way to overwrite the colours in an automatic way.
I have a big brand and they have a touchpoint that works with partners and the components there need need colour overrides and I see no way how to handle this without either bloating my main tokens with themes nobody needs at that level, or to bloat the touchpoint with instances of our components and nest them which is something nobody needs either.
