Review updates window needs ground rework

There is a couple if usability issues related to this window

1 –  Review updates window – lies color modes

Reviewing components from external library using variable modes for e.g. Dark / Light UI - this window shows fake color modes for sub frames of the component. Thus it makes impossible to validate if specific elements are ok to or not.

Example: review window displays Background from Dark mode, but texts from Light mode

In reality components look like that

Real Dark and Light look

2 – Weak usability – Clickology when large number of components to review

Example: To review 250 components I need to perform one thousand of clicks

Super annoying workflow

Solution proposal:

Instead of that, I would recommend using strategy from text editors, commonly known as “find and replace and go to next one”. In our case it could be: “Update & next” or similar.

In 99% of cases I use it like that. If there is a second verification needed after update - I can click “< back”

2b – Go to instance > change to Toggle “Follow each component on canvas”

3 – Differences only

When validating large number of updated components  usually only 25% of components are affected with the change. Reviewing them all it tedious and time consuming process (1000 clicks for 250 components!)

Figma gives useOverlay mode - wich seems to look nice, but does not work as intended.

Example: Lets imagine I have replaced buttons sequence for some specific variants of the component.
Now I can see this

But for larger or complex components it is tiring proces to find the difference.

Solution proposal: Use the Difference blend mode known from photoshop instead of Transparency slider

Thanks for getting back to me and for passing this on to the team.

I know my feedback was written a bit quickly and could have been more polished, but I believe it touches on some important aspects of the overall Figma user experience.

If the team has any questions or would like me to clarify any of the points, I’d be happy to help.

Hi Jaycee, thanks for the update and for passing it on to the team! 🙌 I only just noticed that I made a few mistakes in my original post, but that's what happens when you write things in a rush 😅 Appreciate you keeping me posted if there's any news.

Hi @Jaycee Lewis
I've found another frustrating usability issue related to the workflow described in point 2. I'll attach a short video to demonstrate just how many unnecessary clicks are required.

When I open Manage Libraries → Review Library Updates, I get a list of components waiting for updates.

Now, let's say I select the first component just to inspect the changes, but decide not to update it yet.

The review dialog opens on top of the existing window. I can inspect the changes, but there is no simple way to skip this component and move to the next one without updating it.

Instead, I have to close the review dialog. And here's the problem: closing it also closes the underlying Manage Libraries window!

So, to review the next component, I have to start the entire process again:
Assets → Review Library Updates → Select component → Review → Close → Start over.

And it gets even worse.

The Review Library Updates button is located under the Assets tab. This makes sense in theory, but in practice, when reviewing component updates, I often need to inspect their actual usage on the canvas, see which Page they're on, and understand their context.

To do that, I need to switch from Assets to File.

While switching tabs is possible with the review dialogs open, returning to the update list becomes even more tedious. I have to switch back to Assets and repeat the entire process.

This is a classic UX anti-pattern: forcing users to repeatedly navigate through the same steps just to continue a single task.

A few suggestions:

  • Next / Skip - Allow users to move to the next component without applying the current update.
  • Keep the update list open - Closing the review dialog should return users to the component list, not dismiss the entire workflow.
  • Better canvas integration - Make it easier to inspect components in their actual context without constantly switching between Assets and File.

When reviewing dozens or hundreds of components, this is not just annoying. It's a significant waste of time.

The attached video shows the problem (part of it) in action.
