Issue with Bulgarian Cyrillic on fonts

Hello!

I am a community advocate for FOF, Sofia for Bulgaria and we experience difficulties when we want to use Bulgarian Cyrillic in several fonts with the “Stylistic sets” feature, but Bulgarian Cyrillic just doesn’t work. When I try the same in Adobe Illustrator for example - there are no problems. The only solution we’re able to find is to change the font’s core defaults to this type of Cyrillic, otherwise, it is impossible to use the stylistic set in Figma.

I’d like to raise this issue again. Contemporary Bulgarian Cyrillic letterforms have existed for over 70 years and where technology allows, should be the official graphical standard of an entire country. They differ from Russian forms, particularly in the lowercase glyphs.

In recent years their use has grown significantly. Major tech companies now include Bulgarian alternates in their default Cyrillic fonts, and we see this localization in the software we use every day. Many commercial fonts support them as well.

Entire design projects and the brand identities of major national companies depend on this. Their use has increased, mainly thanks to Adobe enabling OpenType features, and today virtually all self-respecting brands use Bulgarian Cyrillic. Emerging brands are also building their typographic identity around fonts that support these alternates. All brands rely on technology to render their typography consistently across platforms.

The number of such fonts continues to grow. It is unfortunate that, now that the fonts are available, we are still technically restricted from applying them correctly in Figma.

Please consider resolving this issue. 🙂
