Figma is far too difficult to navigate for basic ongoing work

I’m posting this as a former paying subscriber because the usability problems became frustrating enough that I cancelled my subscription.

My main issue is not what Figma can do — it’s how unnecessarily difficult it is to continue existing work.

I’m using Figma for an app project, and something as basic as reopening the same project, finding the correct working file, returning to Figma Make, and locating the AI prompt workspace has repeatedly been confusing.

The biggest problems I’ve experienced are:

  • Figma Design, Prototype and Figma Make feel disconnected.
  • It is not obvious how to return to the same Make/AI workspace I was using previously.
  • Similar project cards make it unclear which file is the real working project.
  • Navigation changes depending on which part of Figma you are in.
  • Important controls are hidden or difficult to discover.
  • I regularly spend time trying to find my own project instead of working on it.

A user should be able to open Figma, see their active project immediately, click it, and continue exactly where they left off. That basic workflow should be effortless.

Figma is capable of impressive things, but the navigation and overall usability have made the platform extremely frustrating to use. I cancelled my subscription because of this.

I hope this feedback reaches the product and UX teams, because the core experience needs to become much more intuitive for people who are not already expert Figma users.

Hi @vilatislife, thank you for taking the time to write this out, especially after cancelling. Feedback from someone who left is genuinely harder to come by and more useful than most.

Your pain points are real and heard: navigation patterns aren't consistent across Figma Design, Prototype, and Figma Make, and an easy way to "get back to what I was doing" is harder than it should be. That's a fair thing to be frustrated by. Two things that may help in the meantime:

  • Returning to a Make file: Make files live in a project like any other file, so they'll appear under Recents in the file browser. Opening from Recents also means "Back to files" returns you to Recents rather than dropping you somewhere unexpected.
  • Telling similar cards apart: Renaming files and switching the project view from grid to list makes the working file much easier to spot at a glance.

To make sure I flag the right thing to the team, could I ask:

  1. Where do you usually start? Figma.com home in the web browser, the desktop app, or a bookmarked file?
  2. At which step does it break down: finding the project, finding the file inside it, or getting back into the Make prompt workspace?
  3. Which controls felt hidden? Even one or two examples can help a lot.

With your feedback, I’ll share this thread with the team either way. Thanks again for your honesty.
