Figma Agent doesn't understand the Figma API

Tyler Nickerson

Hey folks,

Just wanted to share some feedback I had about the new Figma Agent feature when it comes to generating plugins and shaders. I was prompting this morning to create a new shader fill, and initially the agent refused my request to support a dropdown in the shader config because it said it didn’t exist. I checked the docs, found where it is supported, and sent a screenshot to the agent, after which it corrected course. Seems like something it should have understood out-of-the-box.

Also, it claims it can’t add handles or overlays to its shader fills, such as how the Mesh Gradient fill gives you handles to configure the colors. Not sure if this is true or not, but if so seems like it would be a nice thing to support for shaders made by users and not just official Figma shaders.

Hey @Tyler Nickerson, thanks for flagging this!

This is really valuable feedback as we continue to improve the Figma Agent, especially around shaders and plugins which just launched!

You're right that the Agent shouldn't have refused the dropdown request, since it is supported. This definitely sounds like a gap in the Agent's knowledge of the updated API that we'll want to flag to the team.

On your second point about handles and overlays (like those on Mesh Gradient fills), we want to make sure we give you an accurate answer rather than guess. Could you share a bit more about what you originally prompted the Agent with? That'll help us reproduce to confirm whether this is a current limitation or another knowledge gap on the Agent's end.

With that information, we’ll share your feedback internally with the team. This is exactly the kind of detail that will help us improve!
