Yeah, it is frustrating especially when one’s computer has a small screen size. They could at least make the new panel collapsible or allow us to reduce the sizes of the 2 side panels and make them smaller! 
or independent panel collapsing 🤷

In the meantime, you can use the icon shown in the screenshot to collapse the sidebar, or use the shortcut ⇧ ⌘ \ to toggle it.
 

That said, I understand this isn't quite what you're looking for, as it currently collapses both the left and right panels together rather than allowing them to be collapsed independently.
