Add request access to view, edit, or dev mode in the same location

When users who don’t have full seats receive a link to a Figma file, the see this view (assuming they are authorized to view it).

At least half the people do not notice or don’t understand how to request access to dev mode or, if they already have permissions, to access Dev mode from here. The toast on the bottom ends up being a much stronger signal than incomprehensible “switch to dev mode” icon, so they click it. As a result, our admins get multiple Edit requests per day… This is problematic in multiple ways:

  • Devs who were trying to get access to product specs and already have permissions, can’t so the work is paused or completed based on screenshots (trust me, it happens all the time)
  • Admins of the organization are bombarded with Edit requests multiple times a day. They ignore these requests since we don’t add any designers on any cadence, but they still have to sort between reasonable Dev seat requests and Edit requests instead of adding devs in bulk
  • There’s actually no way to change someone’s permissions to Dev permissions from the file, but a designer can change someone’s permissions to Edit. Does that result in additional billing? I don’t know.

Overall, the Dev mode is completely hidden, and everything is trying to push the user to start editing. While I understand the business logic behind it, definitely not everyone needs to be an editor in Figma. Please make switching to Dev mode more straightforward. I believe that you can do this by adding button #2 (Request access [to dev mode]) on the right to button #1 (Start editing) on the bottom.
