Z button doesn't always turn on zoom

Hello,

For past 2 months or so I’m experiencing a bug in which the Z button randomly does not toggle on zoom tool. So instead of zooming in on selected space Figma starts to select all the objects in that space (sometimes causing slow downs in more advanced projects), then I try second time and instead of zooming I am moving those selected objects. Then I have to slow down my muscle memory and try a few times until the magnifying glass symbol symbol pops up instead of the default arrow.

It’s quite frustrating. I’m sure my Z button works well, I use two sets of keyboards and use Z to zoom in Adobe software too, never had an issue.

Please fix <3

Hi!

Thank you for reaching out. It turns out it is indeed connected to an UI element being highlighted – here the Design button. During the first part of the recording I was both trying to press Z and click on the empty workspace. What helped was selecting one of the objects in the layer panel. (sorry that it’s so cropped, I can’t share the project and everything worked normally on a newly created blank file). So now I know where to look when it’s happening but I still think it needs fixing.

Hey @qazwsxedc, thanks for reaching out and sorry this has been an ongoing annoyance for two months!

A couple of things that would help:

  1. Does this happen in the browser, the desktop app, or both?
  2. If you're able to grab a quick screen recording of it happening (including the moment right before you press Z), that would help a lot.

In the meantime, one thing worth trying: click once on an empty part of the canvas right before pressing Z. If the issue tends to follow interacting with a panel or another part of the UI first, that's a useful clue for us.

I appreciate you flagging it, and sorry for not having a quick fix on hand just yet!

Hey @qazwsxedc, thanks for coming back with this and sharing the screen recording!

What you found lines up with what I'd expect: it sounds like the Z shortcut is getting intercepted while keyboard focus is sitting on a toolbar element in Figma Design (the Design button, in your case) instead of the canvas. That's why clicking an object in the layer panel resets things and lets Z work normally again.

I don't have a confirmed root cause or timeline from the team yet, but I'm passing your notes and recording along so they have a clear, repeatable trigger to look into.

Really appreciate you taking the time to dig into this and share it with us!
