Question

Why is copy pasting broken ?

Catalin_Edu

When I copy and paste stuff the pasting places elements in the most random locations. This used to be one of the best features figma had, flawless positioning on paste.
It is quite sad that this feature broke and time gets invested in those pal characters.

Hey Catalin_Edi, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Precise paste positioning is an important part of the Figma workflow, so it’s definitely inconvenient when it doesn’t work as expected.

I couldn’t reproduce the issue on my end, so any extra context would be really helpful. Could you let me know:

  • Does this occur when using the "Paste here" feature, or does it happen with another one?

  • Is it happening on the browser, the desktop app, or both?

As a first step, try force-quitting and reopening Figma in a new browser window —or if you're using the Figma desktop app, force-quit and restart it completely to see if that helps. Also, we also recommend checking out our troubleshooting checklist for additional steps that may help resolve the issue.

If the issue continues, feel free to submit a bug report here: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001744374. And if you can share a quick screen recording or example directly in the form, it would help the team to better visualise and replicate the issue.

Thanks again for flagging this!

Hi Celine,
It happens when I Cmmd + C and then Cmmd +V. All objects lose relative position to each other.
It happens to all folks in my company.

Thanks for the clarification, and I'm really sorry to hear that this is happening to everyone in your company! This is certainly not the expected behavior.

As this isn’t something we’re currently aware of, and I can’t reproduce it, it would be super helpful if you could fill out a quick bug report when you have a moment. This will help our technical team investigate what might be happening on your end with your company 🙏🏼

In the meantime, here are a few things you and your company can try as a workaround:

  • Use Duplicate

When possible, try using Duplicate (Command D) instead of copy-paste. This should keeps everything in place on the canvas and avoids layout shifts if you want to duplicate on the same page.

  • Paste to replace
  1. Select and copy an object using the keyboard shortcut:
    • Mac: ⌘ Command C
    • Windows: Control C
  2. Select the objects you'd like to replace with the copied object.
  3. Right-click your selection and click Paste to replace from the menu. (Or you can use these shortcut: Mac: ⇧ Shift ⌘ Command  / Windows: Control Shift R)

This function lets you swap a selected object with one you've copied. It’s great for quickly updating placeholders or wireframes.

  • Try using "Paste Here
  1. Select and copy an object using the keyboard shortcut:
    • Mac: ⌘ Command C
    • Windows: Control C
  2. Position your cursor where you want the top left of your copied object to be placed.
  3. Right-click and select Paste here.

The Paste here option lets you choose the exact placement for a pasted object. The object is placed in the location of your cursor on the canvas or in a frame.
Please note: when you use "Paste here" with an auto layout frame, the object will be pasted on top of the frame, not inside it.
