Why do I need an educator plan to collaborate with people who are in education?

I was hired as a contractor at a school, and they are using the educator plan. Now I can’t work on their current file because I don’t have an education email.

Why is Figma so damn un-useable and have obstacle after obstacle for things that should be simple?

How can I work on this educator plan as a regular user WITHOUT MAKING A NEW FILE?

Hey @UserFiore, thanks for reaching out and I understand your frustration on the restriction.

On the Education plan, anyone invited with can edit access to an Education team needs verified education status. Education status is for current students and educators in a classroom, so it may not be an option for a contractor role.

You shouldn't need to create a new file. Here are two options I’d recommend:

Option 1, move the file to a free Starter team

This works well if you and the school both need to edit.

  1. Someone at the school creates a team that isn't on the Education plan, like a free Starter team. They need to be a member of both teams with can edit access.
  2. They right click the file in the file browser, select ‘Move file…’, then choose the folder in the new team. Files left in drafts can only be shared with can view access on the Starter plan.
  3. They invite you to the new team with can edit access.

A Starter team has a single folder with up to 3 Figma Design files, 3 FigJam files and 3 Figma Slides files. It doesn't include team libraries, and version history is limited to 30 days.

Option 2, transfer the folder to your Professional plan

This works well if you'd rather do the editing from your own team.

  • An admin at the school transfers the folder to your team, and the files keep their comments and version history.
  • When you accept, you can choose to keep the school's collaborators. They join with a free View seat, so they can view and comment.
  • Anyone at the school who needs to edit on your team would need a paid seat, such as a Full seat for Figma Design files.
  • The folder leaves the school's team, so it's worth checking they're comfortable with that.

You can find the steps in our Help Center articles: Move a file, Transfer a folder or team to a different account, Starter plan overview and Figma for Education.

Hope this helps!
