Why can’t I create prototype interactions with a component when its source component exists on a different page in the same Figma file?

This is really frustrating!

I was always able to prototype components even when the source component lived on another page in the same file.

Now I can’t prototype even simple interactions, like buttons, unless I’m on the page where the source component actually lives. It’s making prototyping unnecessarily difficult. 😩

Does anyone know if there’s a fix for this, or if it’s a bug?

Hey hey ​@Veronica Pena 👋 Thanks for your question. 

Two quick questions:

  • Is it a state change on the button itself (hover, pressed), or a connection that navigates or opens an overlay?
  • Is the source component local to this file, or from a published library?

A request: Could you share a short screen recording of you setting up the interaction and then playing it? Full screen and unzoomed if possible. A recording shows whether the connection can't be created at all or is created but doesn't fire in Present mode, which a screenshot won't.

One note: the docs note that connections drawn from a main component only inherit to instances on the same page, and library components can't be prototyped this way — https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404380377367-Add-prototype-connections-from-main-components. Worth checking if the file was reorganized recently.
