Question

Weird cropping/zooming in of images when exporting

Me and my colleague have both recently experienced the same issue — when exporting frames as png/jpeg, some random images within the frame are cropped and zoomed in, not in a way they appear on the canvas. All images are rectangles with a photo fill set to crop yet only some of them do this when exported. If you copy the frame as png, everything is fine, and the issue persists only when exporting

Hi @stacie s, thanks for flagging this!

This definitely seems odd. One thing that stands out: Figma doesn't bake crops into the image, it stores a transform that gets applied at render time. Copy as PNG and Export use different rendering paths, so a mismatch like this usually means the export path is evaluating that transform differently, which lines up with what you're seeing. A few things that would help us narrow it down:

  1. Image sampling: Select one of the affected rectangles and check the sampling setting on the fill (Automatic / Smooth / Pixelated). If it's on Smooth, try switching to Automatic and re-exporting. We've seen smoothing interact oddly with cropped fills on export.
  2. Nesting: Are the misbehaving rectangles nested inside another frame with clipping or a mask, versus the ones that export fine?
  3. Export path: Does it still happen if you export from the desktop app vs. browser (or the other way around)? And at 1x vs 2x?

It’s also worth nothing that your colleague is seeing the same thing. Are you both on the same OS/browser, or different setups? Let me know and we can continue troubleshooting this together.

The issue has just fixed itself with a restart of the app 😭 I’ll try the steps and make an update if this happens again as already the two of us have encountered it. There is no clipping or a mask anywhere within the frame; me and my colleague are both on MacOS and use the app
