Question

Variable width update broke Figjam handwriting with drawing tablet

Blaize

I use a drawing tablet to document and sketch app prototypes for work. Until recently, I preferred using FigJam over Figma Design for this, specifically because FigJam didn’t apply the aggressive — and often laggy — line-smoothing algorithm that Figma Design uses with the pencil tool.

Unfortunately, the June 26th update seems to have changed that. Now, FigJam is attempting to auto-correct my strokes, but it's doing so poorly — skipping parts of the line and miscalculating stroke width. Here's an example:

I have the same problem when I use Figjam in the web browser.

Hey @Blaize @Renzo_Murillo - thanks for bringing this up (and apologies for the late response to you especially @Blaize).

Can you both verify some things for me? A couple of them might be weird/obvious asks, but I want to verify as much as I can before I check internally on this:

  • What brand/model of tablets are you using?
  • Are you both using an Apple pencil or other stylus? If so, can you tell me brand and model?
    • Do you notice that performance quality decreases when you only use a stylus vs. just a finger?

I was testing some motion on my iPad (Figjam on web), and things seemed to be okay, but doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem hiding.

Is it possible for either of you to capture a screen recording while you are actively working with the pen tool in Figjam? I’d like to get a look at that live look for reference.

Thanks!

Hi @ksn, I was able to find a temporary workaround by switching to my Macbook, it seems to work fine on MacOS. So this issue is only for Windows PCs.

Here are the answers to your questions:

  1. I am using a Huion 1060 Plus Drawing tablet. Is it very similar to a Wacom tablet.
  2. I am using the stylus that comes with the Huion drawing tablet, which has 8192 levels of pressure detection.
  3. I noticed that the performance increased when disabling “Windows Ink” on my computer, but that disables the pressure detection, which in turn doesn’t allow me to have variable width strokes.

I’ll try to capture a screen recording soon and attach it to this post. Thank you.

I tried again this morning, but I was no longer able to use the variable width feature with my pen—it suddenly stopped working, even on macOS. Until today, I was using my Mac as a workaround and really enjoying the update. On Windows, there's still some lag and a slight delay, but at least the strokes no longer have the small artifacts they used to—though that seems to be only because variable width is no longer being applied at all.

Was the variable strokes update rolled back or did something change on my end ?

Hey @Blaize - sorry it took a while for me to respond here! I can check in with some engineers on my end -- I’m not sure if there was an update that could’ve done this.

Just to verify for now (since it’s been a while), this is still a problem, correct? If it has kind of ‘morphed’ into something else after your last update, let me know.
