I’ve been using a Wacom tablet with Figma for a couple of years now. I use it as my default mouse that also helps me quickly sketch ideas with the Pencil tool. Since the release of the variable width stroke function I have been having some issues with the Pencil tool.

I’m going to do my best to explain these issues below. If these should be split into different issues, please let me know if you want me to split these up. English is not my first language so I apologize for any errors.

Summary of 3 issues

Issue 1: Selecting a different width profile while using the Pencil tool does not allow me to draw with it. It shows as if it is selected but does not change my actual width profile.
Issue 2: Seemingly randomly Figma starts reflecting pen pressure and kind of creates its own width profile while drawing lines.
Issue 3: Switching the width profile makes already drawn lines dissapear.

Steps to reproduce

Issue 1

  1. Open Pencil tool (Shift + P).
  2. Under Stroke settings I select any option from the Width profile dropdown.
  3. I start drawing lines with the Pencil tool.
  4. Every stroke profile looks the same, regardless of the selection made.

Issue 2

  1. Open Pencil tool (Shift + P).
  2. I start drawing lines with the Pencil tool, strokes appear as expected without reflecting pressure. https://imgur.com/a/ZvdNLFc
  3. After a random time, amount of strokes, pen pressure applied or switching monitors, pen pressure is now suddenly showing in some of the strokes kind of automatically creating a new type of unwanted width profile .https://imgur.com/a/Xhla8Lo

Issue 3

  1. Open Pencil tool (Shift + P)
  2. Under Stroke settings I select the top option which is the default and straight width profile.
  3. I start drawing lines with the Pencil tool.
  4. I stop drawing and change the width profile to any other profile.
  5. The lines drawn in step 3 start dissapearing with every selection of a width profile almost as if I am undoing (Command + Z). https://imgur.com/a/rSIVvLY

Error messages

There are no error messages. I have never seen this behaviour in the past years. The behaviour of the Wacom pen has not changed outside of Figma.

Apps, OS and versions

  • Figma Desktop app on version 125.9.10
  • Mac M4 Pro with Sequoia 15.6.1
  • Wacom Intuos M (CTL-6100WL)

Troubleshooting done

  • Used several pages and (new) documents.
  • Restarted Figma and Mac.
  • Reinstalled and tried different Intuos drivers.

Expected behaviour

Issue 1: If I can select a width profile with the Pen tool I would expect to be able to actually use this width profile.
Issue 2: While drawing I would expect Figma to keep this uniform profile and not changing the appearance of the profile until I actually switch between profiles. A solution could be to have an option to completely turn off pressure sensitivity in Figma (if that is what causes this).
Issue 3: I would expect lines not to dissapear when changing width profiles.

Workaround
A workaround I’m using for Issue 2 now is setting my pressure sensitivity in the Wacom driver software to max. This way Figma detects it as maximum pressure and thus having less difference in stroke width. This is better but still very unreliable.

I hope my description and information is clear. Would love to hear from you.

Thanks and all the best.
